@Tilopa Empathy is the ability to perceive the emotions of others. Sadism is taking delight in the suffering of others. To practice sadism requires the ability to perceive the emotions of the victims, or there could be no delight in those emotions. Cruelty without sadism can exist but sadism without the empathy to take the requisite delight is nonsense.
