       WH - I have been despised by EVERYONE that ever said they wanted to be my friend Because I would NOT do what Cathy did.  What THEY all Did.  IF you do not 'follow' the tribe, you are despised BECAUSE people have not the self discipline to say "No". Cathy said "Yes" to "society" - married into it.  Which is WHY Heathcliffe was so cruel.Do try the book again: It is the Frustration - the inner turmoil of Heathcliffe AND Cathy (who knows she chose wrongly) that is the appeal of Wuthering Heights.

       @oldthoughts True, he saw through all of that and I believe Cathy did as well, but wanted to escape the muck of her upbringing, but at what a cost.

       @cully45 - Hello Ann, Much bettter, surely, to be content with Needs being met, rather than always 'wanting more' -  In englisc, hlaf syle us todæg ..."Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me."It has always seemed to me that people pursue Greed with  enthusiasm; while willing to discard those for whom they should be most grateful.  Which ends up, as you note, costing them far more.
