@clive I use some relatives pretty often, by using m-dashes to demarcate dependent clauses. It's a tactic that's not for everyone -- it'll make some people nuts! -- but I like it, and you can put any ol' additional punctuation you want in there.

@clive It's Hemingway's fault that these punctuation marks died out. Sentences in 19th century lit could be voluminous,— they got to gallivant all over the place. Now we have it pounded into our heads that sentences must be succinct and direct.

@clive so, what are the line breaking rules for this punctuation? I note that my computer did a line break between the comma and em-dash in your sample paragraph, but that seems somehow wrong:— the comma no em-dash should remain together at the end of the preceding line. Should we be using a zero-width non-breaking space between them?

@OctaviaConAmore They're composite, so it's just a semicolon and an m-dashor in a pinch, two hyphens instead of an m-dash, like so :--
