Here's an interesting word-cognition thing.I saw the phrase "swim goggle," and it took me about 15 seconds to realize it didn't say "swim Google." I was confused. What is a "swim Google." I've seen linguistics studies on things like this before! I probably see the word "Google" 2000x more than I see "goggle." "Goggles" obviously goes with "swim" though. But because I usually see it plural— "swim goggleS"— my brain didn't process it. #linguistics #WordNerd

@grammargirl I don't use Google which is probably why I read it as goggle.

@grammargirl Would a cyclops have a goggle or would it still be called goggles?

@grammargirl I'll also bet you see the word "Google" a googol times more than "googol".

@grammargirl Ahh, if you were British, you’d be be smitten with the show Goggle Box and would maybe have a different reaction. (A show where you watch people who watch and discuss TV, oddly)

@grammargirl Swim google does raise interesting possibilities, since we either swim or sink in the Google world.

@grammargirl This is interesting. My daughter was a competitive swimmer, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the singular form swim goggle. It’s always plural, goggles. Sort of like “pants,” which always come in pairs.

@grammargirl Wonderful.I once spoke someone who couldn't find something on Google. I told him to do the other google."What's that?""Go ogle. Outside."(Perhaps too British for most Americans, but it often works.)
