@colinsmatt11 It’s good to be aware of, not good to dedicate an entire year (or more) of school to it, versus something like… programming?

@alex @colinsmatt11 But Alex, without understanding Fourier Transforms, how are you going to design calculator art like this?(and don’t just say graphing a bunch of functions with explicit bounds because that’s lame)

@alex I have used trigonometry exactly once in my adult life, when I was challenging myself in a submarine simulator game to calculate a torpedo firing solution by myself instead of letting the computer do it for me.As early as WW2 much of this was already mostly done by (analog, mechanical) computers too.

@guizzy@pleroma.guizzyordi.info @alex@gleasonator.com i've used it to generate animated cylindrical meshes, but yeah that's about it i think

@guizzy@pleroma.guizzyordi.info @alex@gleasonator.com sin also makes a really nice easy easing function

@alex @colinsmatt11 >math nerds insist on teaching this nonsense while kids graduating high school can't figure out how to do normal shit like read a measuring tape or convert units in the kitcheneven school geometry is all like "help this mystery meat homosexual calculate the surface area of a cone so he can shove it up his ass" rather than "how many buckets of paint should you buy to cover a room of these dimensions"

@alex I call sin/cos functions regularly but I rarely have to think about how they work internally (apart from how precise a particular algorithm for them is)

@alex although higher level stuff that depends on them I do have to think about (fourier transforms and spherical harmonics etc etc)

@alex @colinsmatt11 Ironically, I’ve used trig more in programming than I had when I was in school.

@skylar @alex @colinsmatt11 I actually took a neat hybrid Woodshop/Geometry class in High School. It was double blocked so that we did a class period of normal Geometry, and then after the break between classes we'd do a class period of various Carpentry stuff. Built a fairly nice small cabin from the ground up, frame, wiring, insulation, and all that, as a running project that the school sold at the end of the year to help fund the class. Learned a lot of neat things that year.

@guizzy @alex Someone might say you should know how it works or else the computer might as well be magical. However, it'd be impossible to know everything that can be known, so we might have to pick and choose.

@m0xee I could not tell you although it was likely computer generated by feeding in a piece of cursive, and the fourier series was fitted to it with some specified margin of error. I would be surprised if it matched the original exactly

@Binkle Oh, yes, looks cool though. I'll try looking it up, maybe with a _very_ rough approximation it can be kept short enough to be used as a pickup line for a certain type of gals 🤣
