If I wanted to get an Android phone for testing websites, but I wanted to pay next to nothing for it, what would be a good make and model? I'm thinking second hand here.Probably should be able to run the most recent version of Android (I suppose? Is that important?).#Android #advice #webdev

@john it would be good to test on a low spec but common android phone. Samsung Galaxy A series would be a good bet.

@john Motorolas x) I have g22, I searched new but low budget one. Whole G series, I think, is low budget. I am mostly pleased. Also ppl often get Huawei, but I have no idea which series there is low budget.

@John@socks.masto.host I'm not after anything good here. What I really want is an average Android experience for as cheap as I can. It's not like I'll be using it as a phone.

@john Word of advice here, based on chatter on Infosec mastodon recently, stay away from the cheap Chinese models. They are apparently preloaded with malware.

@ProgGrrl Yeah, I'm after a standard sort of experience, so I'm probably going to try to get a Samsung. Just wondering how old I can go and still be relevant. Like, I don't think it's worth my time making things work on an iPhone 4, but an iPhone 7 would probably still be a relevant test device.

@john@sauropods.win I just went to look, and $170 for a 2023 Moto G Play seems like a pretty good deal. Or $110 for a 2021 Pure.New phones, presumably a few years from end of life.(From the Moto store)

@John@socks.masto.host Too much for me. This is a passing fancy! I was hoping to get something for like £50.I'm seeing damaged Samsung A10s for about that much. But I don't think I can be dealing with a cracked screen because I'm too fussy like that.

@john@sauropods.win Remember that your time is worth a lot! Don't undervalue yourself by putting hours on an out of date phone. But if you can find a current one for a good price, sure.

@john@sauropods.win That's what I'm saying. If you want your testing time to be valuable it has to be against current software, otherwise it's like "try it on an older phone?"

@mojojoflow I like to test touch events. The feel can be quite different than you might expect. I have used an iPhone and an iPhone simulator, and I know there are differences.

@mike To elaborate a bit, they are bad for behaviour, you need to actually test touch input for real if you're doing anything that uses it. They also don't tell you whether you've done something that's going to make scrolling really janky, for example. My experience with the iPhone emulator is that it doesn't even get the rendering right!

@john any samsung a series will get you a solid, cheap, android phone that also represents what most android users have.

@john Samsung A Series is a good choice. Choose an Android device which supports at least Jelly Bean. Anything below Jelly Beans is obsolete.https://www.google.com/amp/s/arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/google-will-kill-off-very-old-versions-of-android-next-month/amp/
