       German carnivals are something else. Today I'm bringing you weird (and suspiciously brownface/blackface) photos of a local carnival team, that took prehistoric humans/ice age as their main theme. They are supposed to look scary cause carnival theme. They invested a lot into concept, but I can't really tell you if brownface is because they tried to go for weird execution of historical accuracy or they were plain racist...        @bon_balaur It's hard to tell from the photos if they're meaning to make their skin darker, or just dirty. Dirt-face is it's own weird little trope used for "cave" people and medieval peasants.

       It's also interesting to note, that surrounding area (as well as local university) is famous for prehistoric sites with one of the oldest animal figurines made of mammoth ivory found in the ~nearby caves. So possibly that was also the inspiration source for the team.

       Usual themes that different clubs/teams use for their costumes are witches, demons, trolls,various kinds of animals, but sometimes it's also people of certain professions like postmen, railway and vineyard workers.

       @john I'm also wondering about this.Though I'd guess if they just went for "dirty faces", they'd do it in patches/splotches of dirt and not color the faces uniformly. If I get a bit of spare time on weekend,I'll try to search a bit of info on the team and maybe I can clear this up.

       @john it also doesn't help, that it was raining whole day then(everyone was soaked through and everything was dripping)+as part of carnival, if it rains, the participants mess with everyone by jumping into dirty puddles to splosh dirt everywhere or sticking a pig/bovine intestine balloons into water and then smashing those into people's faces. So kids makeup could as well be just messed during carnival.
