I'm using the vanilla Mastodon web client in "Advanced" (= Tweetdeck-like) mode. I can't find a way to translate a post into English. Am I merely being dumb? Or is it not there?

@mike I get a "Translate" hyperlink at the bottom of a post. Maybe the post needs to be recognised as being in a foreign language before the link can be added?

@jgrg @mike Whether the translate feature is present depends on your Mastodon instance.As a Mastodon instance admin, you can configure your instance to use either #LibreTranslate or #DeepL (if you have an API key).https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19218

@mike @askopenscience @jgrg I looked into this a few weeks ago, and there was some blockage, which I don’t remember. I’ll look again.

@john @askopenscience @jgrg Appreciated! (But don't burn too much time on this, it's only a WIBNI, not a MLIIW.)

@mike @john @askopenscience @jgrg If you're on a Mac running macOS Ventura, there's a systemwide translation feature. If it's one of the supported languages, select the text, right click and choose Translate. If you are privacy conscious you can also download the language sets and opt for it to be done on device.

@JonnyT @mike @askopenscience @jgrg if only “selecting text” was possible on iOS 😉.

@JonnyT @john @askopenscience @jgrg I am on Monterey, and don't seem to have that facility. Thanks anyway!

@mike @JonnyT @askopenscience @jgrg Really Mike? I'm on Monterey too, and it's there in the right-click menu. Second option in Safari, right after "Look Up [...]".

@mike @JonnyT @askopenscience @jgrg Yeah, although it is in other apps as well. Perhaps only first -party apple ones

@john @JonnyT @askopenscience @jgrg Seems possible. I wonder if there's a Chrome/Firefox extension that knows how to access the relevant Apple API.

@john @JonnyT @askopenscience @jgrg Yes, I checked: it's present on Safari. Mystery solved.

@mike @john @askopenscience @jgrg It should be present whatever app you use. But some third-party apps (really bloody annoyingly imo) customise what gets shown in their context menus and it looks like Firefox and Chrome are two of the culprits, even on Ventura.Is Shortcuts available on Monterey? If so, you can potentially add something to the Services menu instead. See screenshot.

@JonnyT @mike @askopenscience @jgrg Google probably want you to use their translation, but in Firefox this is tantamount to a bug.

@mike @john @askopenscience @jgrg And if not Shortcuts, then maybe you can build something in Automator to achieve similar?
