OMG.1. Google has some bad summarization telling people that throwing batteries into the ocean is good.2. News articles were written about this.3. Bing's "AI" interprets these articles as advice to ... throw batteries in the ocean!🤦

Bing doesn’t have AI yet. They’ll be rolling it out in near future bing.com/new

@anthropoid It's very sensitive to phrasing. "should i throw my car battery in the ocean" (without quotes) is what I used, minor variations give "illegal" or "no" or "not a good idea".

I hope it’s not a place where people take advise from on battery disposal anyway ;)

@itamarst That was about 10 years ago, right? I remember when it happened it became a big meme for a while and spawned lots of satire before Google fixed it. It was just a matter of them grabbing a satirical response from Quora and not being able to identify the satire. But the meme lives on.

@shacker Yes, all this hype about "AI" in #search is nonsense. #Google search has been exposing "AI", aka statistically generated rubbish, for over a decade now.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Knowledge_GraphIt was always a disaster.

@itamarst My thoughts on this race: #Wikipedia has never tried to be #Google, so Google should stop trying to be Wikipedia. At least #Bing gave citations, so you can see why the answer is ridiculous.I hope these #AI's are never used to displace actual content. I would hate for search results to get even worse, to the point there isn't a very good way to tell if the responses are correct or not.

@itamarst This reminds me of a few weeks when the Google 'answer box' was saying that it takes 5-10 minutes to caramelize onions citing this infamous Slate piece that explicitly rejects that entire idea (it takes 30-40 minutes): https://slate.com/human-interest/2012/05/how-to-cook-onions-why-recipe-writers-lie-and-lie-about-how-long-they-take-to-caramelize.html
