I typically discover the best and most interesting content via my RSS reader, not social media. @clive wrote an excellent article on why you should be using an RSS reader and how to get the most from it.https://clivethompson.medium.com/how-i-use-rss-to-rewild-my-attention-7731267a40d8#RSS #Learning

@jon @clive I often forget that most people don't have an RSS reader setup... it's absolutely how I stay current and find weird stuff too. RSS is the best.

@jon @clive #4 answered my question. RSS feeds sounds daunting if I can't organize it. I find myself trying to remember which sites I regularly go to and other times I forget I have bookmarks. I'll put this on my to-do list for work.

@drweb2 @jon Yep, agreedThe toolset 10 or 15 years ago wasn't as robust, in part because the backend stuff that propels many of these RSS-as-a-service sites has gotten faster and cheaper and more performant

@jon @clive It makes me sad thinking about my meticulously organized and curated Firefox live bookmarks from ~15 years ago. We were so quick to throw everything away! I never really got into using Feedly like I did the built in Firefox RSS tools but this is motivation to give it another try.

@greg @clive I think it's a lot like Mastodon. I did the same when I first got here. But as time goes on, I unfollow the people/feeds I don't care for, and it continuously makes my feed better. And similarly, I've become slightly more selective in the people I follow here the same way I have with the feeds I add to my reader.

@jon @greg Yeah, I think my advice only works if one is rigorous about unfollowing. And you are quite correct that the overload can be significant That’s why I use folders — I never look at the raw feed of all 444 sites at once The upside of #2 is that it maximizes the chance is serendipity

@jon @clive When my RSS reader shut over a decade ago I felt strangely relieved - I'd treated it like email and always felt guilty that it was never at zero. But I soon missed it! Now I've embraced a world without inbox zero I think it's time to get back on the RSS. Can't believe I haven't already tbh...

@jon @shinykatie LolYep, part of the mental orientation for using RSS is to resolve oneself of any need to be a completionist — we’re never gonna read everything, the point is just to have a stream into which we can dip briefly whenever we want

@clive @jon I never understood why RSS and blogs suddenly stopped being a thing. It’s the true social *media* IMO (as opposed to algorithm-served social microblogging).

@GuillaumeL @jon I think the big problem was that place is like Twitter drained the energy of a lot of bloggers <raises hand>It turned out that a lot of things one wanted to say the blog could be said in brief in a short tweet stormPlus, social networks offered built-in audiences, whereas individual blogging required individual efforts for readers to find you and for you to find them

@clive @jon I think it was worse in the early days of blogging, when I myself ran a blog network, where I felt like not reading every single post from every single person was a failure. Now I am older and tireder and I realise the futility. (Then again, the internet was smaller back then so the goal was more within grasp).

@clive @GuillaumeL @jon Twitter and FB killed it for me. For me, it wasn’t that 40 words were enough to really discuss something, it was that “well I just wrote the thesis statement or the snark - what’s the point of blogging it” and it was the lazy and barely good enough solution. I feel like it just sucked the energy out of the ecosystem. Pretty sure I am taking up blogging again
