this is a great thread. as an aside, the kid-friendly-fication of the internet, Apple's whole "walled garden" thing, and Google's take-over of every information platform mean that Kids These Days are about as tech literate as our parents. imo it's actually pretty bad.

Oliver's friends don't know the difference between a search engine and a web browser. their social media experience is being hand-fed a stream of random content by an algorithm. they haven't got the slightest understanding of **how** anything works because it all **simply works**

there are a lot of problems with the movie "Idiocracy," but one insight that i think is important is the more you automate stuff--or the more you use technology to remove tasks and therefore know-how/knowledge from everyday people--the more helpless we become.food is a great example of this. the industrialization of food prep during the 20th century destroyed Americans' ability to feed themselves. people don't know how to make soup! or beans! or gravy!

same thing with cars. there are literally multiple YouTube explainers for Americans on how to practice walking if you're going to visit Europe. how to **practice walking**imo the friction of solving a thousand little daily problems (physical and mental) makes us who we are. it's what we were built for, biologically, it's an important part of how we weave our social fabric.

obviously some amount of technology or automation is a good thing, and i'm not gonna pretend i know where to draw the line. no, i don't think we should be washing laundry by hand, but maybe we shouldn't be using GPS so much to navigate? i don't know.just something to keep in mind as corporations position AI to take over more and more of our thinking for us. when they do this, at first its a convenience but then it becomes a necessity because we can't do it for ourselves. do we want that?

@peter my students who are the best tech users are now around age 33. Basically comes down to ‘did you use MySpace’. People who are older just didn’t have enough tech exposure and younger folks only know walled gardens.

@peter on the other hand, Gremlin 1 (age 14) got a ride to Georgetown but didn't have a ride home so figured out the bus route, including a transfer, with the WMATA app. Didn't even tell us, just came home when she was ready
