"Our Digital History Is at Risk" by me in Time MagazineFree societies need access to history, unaltered by changing corporate or political interests. This is the role that libraries have played and need to keep playing. http://blog.archive.org/2023/02/07/our-digital-history-is-at-risk/

@brewsterkahle yeah the loss of tweets for so many accounts has been hard to deal with. On my agency’s site (and in any client work going forward) we no longer embed tweets, but instead we take screenshots and add a clickable link on that image to the original tweet. This way we don’t lose that record if something happens on Twitter. Personally, I still reference my downloaded twitter data archive all the time, but it doesn’t show threads so often locating the correct order is broken.

@brewsterkahle Let us not forget that in time it will not be so easy to search for photos of ancestors. These are now stored somewhere in the cloud, protected by login credentials that only the (future) deceased knows. Ironically, even though we take a huge number of photos now, in the future there will be few available.

@brewsterkahle Loss of tweets is a good thing. No way to dig up old tweets and start harassment campaigns if those tweets are now considered politically incorrect. Mastodon's automatic post deletion is one of its best features.

@internetarchive @brewsterkahle archive.org talks the talk but notice that the #archive.org contact page does not walk the walk. It directs ppl to the exclusive walled-gardens of #Twitter & #Facebook, in stark contradiction to open access principles. #IA may think they need those platforms for outreach but IA certainly need not link to those accts from the open access webpage. The fedi acct should be there.
