I know that I've become a general safety go to for folks because I know stuff, but I would like to remind people that those that do chemical safety as a specialty are known as Industrial Hygienists (IHs).Chemical safety during a fire is a titch more complex.

If you feel like panicking about how large the evacuation distances from a rail derailment fire are, I have some wisdom:1) Those distances are a function of fire behavior, nastiness & quantity.2) They are normal. This isn't the first derailment hazmat fire we've had.3) By all means, look up the SDS for vinyl chloride. Please take the time to look at the fire behavior section and then look up the SDSs for combustion products. Like phosgene, for example.

@funranium The delayed effects make phosgene one of my very favourite poison gases. Sarcasm strongly implied.My late grandfather, a veteran of the Second World War, used to pay visits to First World War veterans as part of his work with the VFW (a New Deal man, he would have nothing to do with the right-wing American Legion), and he vividly recalled the gravelly voices of phosgene survivors.
