So almost 2 years ago when I was still living in VA, I responded to a FBMP ad for a china cabinet for $40 bucks. It was a beautiful piece and my mind suggested possibilities. I was skeptical that I had a chance, but I responded. Surprisingly, the guy got back to me.I rented a pickup and drove the 25 miles to Manassas. It was a sweet couple who needed the cabinet out of their basement walkout apartment. They were so happy to get rid of it they didn't take the $40. Cabinet was gorgeous.

I put the piece in my garage with the intention of bringing it to my old son, who likes an Asian minimalist look. Meanwhile we move here and into storage it goes.Things start to shift. I am in a rental until the market changes, and the space isn't fitting the furniture I had. I started selling things that weren't working, since I needed to cover these unexpected legal costs for the vaxx mandate lawsuit and my EEO case. Well, I've been on a roll emptying out my storage.

In the process, I've shed a lot of the extras that I truly can live without. And the dining room shifted.Initially I decided to try to sell the cabinet. I priced it on FBMP and it's worth several thousand, as it's an antique in fantastic condition. I discovered three things:1-It's more ornate than most similar pieces2-This style is not in demand in Dallas, Texas3-There are a lot of tables and chairs that are similar. I never knew! The FBMP algorithm started showing me dining sets.

I put my cabinet up for $3800 a month ago. Not one single inquiry. Other stuff has been selling, but not this one. Meanwhile I'm getting loads of suggested dining sets that are in the same period. And that's when I realized that I wanted to keep the cabinet! After all, it was the Lord's gift to me!I had to sell one of my other china cabinets that I was using, in order to make room. Before I could bring the ornate Asian one home from storage it had to go.Well, I sold it for $350.

Meanwhile I'd been looking at many other rosewood cabinets and dining sets. I realized that they were really, really expensive! I started to worry because I'm trying to MAKE some money, not SPEND! I had a table and chairs etc., so I didn't need one, but I wanted to match that beautiful china cabinet that I decided to keep. Just looking at these crazy prices for similar furniture on FBMP, worried me. I knew that antique and high end resale shops would be even higher! Was this a mistake?

@MMA We have some of this stuff made in the 80s. I have no idea how to get rid of them. They are really nice but taste cycles come and go. If you could afford the space, keep it. If you couldn’t, hopefully it’ll go to a good home. Wouldn’t it be nice you could have someone look after it for you for 5 or 10 years, like on loan, then you could get it back afterwards?

And THAT’S when it happened. Up pops this suggested set in the FBMP feed, literally the day before my china cabinet sold for $350:It wasn’t perfect. The leaf was stained. There were only seven chairs. But…BUT….!!*It was the most ornate out of all of the sets I had seen*It was the exact same cherry blossom design*It ALSO came with a HUGE BUFFET!(wait for it…..)*IT WAS JUST $300 DOLLARS!

When I responded, the seller was so nice. It was an 80 minute drive to see the set and I knew it would take me a minimum of four trips to get all the pieces home in my Honda CRV. Still, the gas money wouldn’t come close to what I would spend on any of those other sets.A stain on one of the table leaves?: So I’d take out the leaf until the holidays.Only 7 chairs?: One would come up on FBMP eventually, or I’d stand. I was in the kitchen putzing around most times anyway when I entertained.

I got to the seller’s home and met the couple, great people finishing up their nursing degrees together. They’d been married 35 years! She decided to sell the set when her son’s football team came over to celebrate after winning a game…and a 300 lb. linebacker rocked on one of the hardwood chairs and snapped it like a twig. He also was the one who spilled hot nacho cheese on the leaf and ruined it! She didn’t want the dining set after that. I didn’t blame her, it would be a constant reminder.

I gave them a cash deposit and told them I’d be up on the weekend to do several trips until I’d picked it all up. I would just take the broken chair in the meantime and try to fix it.The husband told me that he had a truck, and would be happy to load up the buffet, table and chair and bring them to me, if I could just cover the cost of the trailer! It cost $53 bucks. I sold my cabinet for $350. ā€œNewā€ set was $300, plus rental of $53.So, that whole set ended up costing me about $3 bucks.

The next day my set was delivered! Not only did this gentleman and his son bring in all the furniture for me, they helped me move the old set out and switch the other china cabinet to the opposite wall, to get it ready to swap out with the cabinet I still have in storage.I put the other dining set—from Bernhardt— up on FBMP already. My son and I took the old table and chairs to the storage unit. I’ll swap the cabinet out once it sells, and is picked up.

So now it’s when things kick into high gear, and the room starts to design itself. This is the fun, creative time for me. It is just like the stages of the hunt: the spotting of prey, the stalking, the pouncing, and the kill. I already have things to accessorize. I’ll keep putting up pics as I decorate more. But, I did need some kind of art, now that the china cabinet switched to the other wall and I sold the other one. And, I do not like ā€˜typical Asian’.So, back to FBMP.And, then…!

It is amazing how different this room is turning out. It's such a change from what I had before...But I like it!I sold something on ebay that converted the cost of the 4 canvases. So far, so good! I started to pull the room together. First, I had to fix the chair. Then, I washed everything and gave it a good polishing with argan oil.It isn't perfect, but that's what I like. When things are in perfect condition, you stress about scratching them. This way, everybody is relaxed.

So here is where we are, so far. I got the canvases hung. I'm going to switch the family room gold silk drapes out for another style, and move those into this room instead. The burgundy is too rich for the room. I have a different oriental rug I want to use, but the room is too small for it so that will have to wait, for now. I need a lampshade. I MUST get some foam cut for all of these chairs. That rosewood is super hard, and is a real pain in the ass if you sit on it without padding!

I have to make the cushions, next, which will be fun. And today I already found the fabric. It's discontinued over 20 years ago so you have to hunt for it, but that's the best part. This pattern is called Whipporwill and is full of colors. That's why it's perfect. I still have a base color scheme throughout my entire house: red, green, blue and yellow. This harmonizes things, even if I'm mixing Chinoiserie in now with my English Cottage and French Provincial look.I'll keep updating!

And because this kinda stuff just DON'T sell here, it's like He ripped off the price tags to prevent me from trying to return it to the store. I couldn't flip this set if I tried!!

No wonder the couple was eager to bring it to me and get it out of their garage before I changed my mind! This showed me that either 1-people really don't like Asian influenced furniture around this area, or 2-Most folks will take a pass over stains/flaws because they don't know how to fix things, or3-This dining set was supposed to be mine all along!

@LoveAlmonds I WISH! Seeing as I'm not a gay man, nor I am not married to a very rich man who can indulge me in playing at being an interior designer, there’s burial no chance of success in the field for yours truly. That career choice is way too late for me, I'm too old to make a living at it. Check out the guy's house who sold me the pictures. He stages homes for realtors. I understand this kind of person! I would decorate exactly the same myself! He truly is living the dream.

@nchia I see. Well, I use my dining set all the time! Everybody comes to my house for holidays and special occasions. I have the grocery bills to prove it too. 😁There's enough of us that we can't all fit at one table. We use both rooms, the kitchen and the dining room. I take the 2 extension leaves out of both tables in January, when it's back to just mom, me and my youngest son. The leaves go right back in around April, (Easter) and stay in through January (New Years) once more.

@Phil @LoveAlmondsIt is! Two ways:1- Strip the top of table by applying a good quality gel stripper, scrape old stain off, rinse well and dry, sand carefully, and then apply a few coats of color-matched stain. Finish off with a matte sealant: apply carefully by wiping a generous amount over the surface slowly with a sponge brush, to avoid bubbles. Any woman whose painted her nails can do it; she's already had years of practice!Or--2- Put a placemat over it.I'ma go with option 2!

@nchia I lost 2 toilets! They were Memoirs from Kohler, and two pedestal sinks in the same pattern. Viciously expensive. I was able to sell two of them-- one sink and a toilet-- to my girlfriend in Delaware. I would have given them to my landlord, but he got dick-y with me at the walk- through and we KNOW how that situation ended up. I threw them right in the trash, rather than let him have them. I'm rarely petty like that--but once you cross this bull, you gone get the horns. FAAFO.

@nchia If my other set doesn't get my asking price, I'm going to keep it. I'll have room in storage; I am getting rid of my king bed and going to a queen instead, to have more room and get rid of this horrid over-firm mattress. I'm getting my old bedroom furniture out of storage and swapping it out for the dressers that I'm using now.Bombay Company was good for a lot of accessories but they don't do furniture well. It could work in a guest room, but not regular use that I'm putting on it.
