Just tried watching a bit of Youtube over lunch. Got 7 ad breaks in 10 minutes. Noped out. Advertising feels like it was in the pre-google pre-popup blocker days. It's getting more numerous and louder because it's getting less effective.

@commandlinekid While this sort of advice is correct as far as it goes (I mean, I know about ad blockers), I feel like there is a more fundamental problem I'm getting at than my own personal experience.

@john when having to watch youtube videos via the official app (as newpipe no longer seems to work), I either turn my phone sound all the way down or consistently shout at my phone over every ad. it gets exhausting tbh

@commandlinekid I was using Safari on an iPad with an ad blocker I forget the name of. It blocks ads on pages well enough that I never think about it, but it's not working on Youtube ads.

@commandlinekid I never said Apple was freedom, it's the opposite. If you think their experience is generally superior for you, you accept the lack of options, that's the Apple bargain.

@john I’m on a friend’s YouTube Music family subscription, which includes ad-free YouTube, so it’s nasty shock when I go to play a video on someone else’s device and realise it’s gotten so toxically bad.

@mike @john I strongly recommend the combination of Ublock Origin and Privacy Badger. I have used both for years. People's description of what Youtube and Twitter are like on the desktop always seem weird to me: so much trash I just never see.

@elysegrasso @john For what it's worth, uBlock Origin alone does it for me, I don't find any need to add Privacy Badger too.

@john @elysegrasso I get that this is not the point you were making. But don't you want your life to be better?Anyway. uBlock Origin describes itself as "an efficient blocker for Chromium and Firefox". So I guess that's a no for Safari, sorry.

@mike @john Looks like Privacy Badger supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera, and has an open ticket for Safari support and a note that the Safari API lacks some features they would need

@john @mike Well, there's your problem 😉 . As a software engineer, I'm not quite in the group that proverbially keeps a gun next to the printer in case it acts shifty, but I come close. I avoid both Microsoft and Apple as much as I can.

@elysegrasso @mike I respect that! If you're sitting there running OpenBSD and all emacs to browse then web more power to you! 😀 I've always been aware of the tradeoffs of using Apple stuff is, and I'm *reasonably* comfortable with it. I think their incentives mostly align with my general computing taste. For now.

@JohnnyDelirious @john One interesting aspect is how many ads are so obviously outside my interests and values. The other day I got one suggesting that some Space Karen project does more for people in my country than the government. I mean, really? 🤔

@john @elysegrasso I share your sense of pragmatics in this respect. I do almost all my work (day-job and academic) on an eight-year-old MacBook whose build quality is so superb that it works as perfectly now as when I unboxed it But on that Mac, I run Emacs, Firefox/Chrome, GIMP, LibreOffice and VLC.

@john @elysegrasso Same thing for Fiona (my wife, the composer). She doesn't really need a computer at all, she just need something that can run Logic Pro. And that means a Mac. So we grit our teeth and pay the Apple Tax.

@mike @elysegrasso The money doesn't really bother me, the hardware is mostly so solid it's a small yearly expenditure (I get by with old Apple hardware too). Even if that wasn't the case, at least it's up-front. Their forays into services and advertising I watch like a hawk. That's where Apple will lose me, if that stuff starts to impact on experience or privacy in a meaningful way.
