@junho8 shingled magnetic recordingit's a method for squeezing more data onto the same HDD platter by overlapping the tracks on the disc, because the read head is more precise than the write headit means that to overwrite data you have to rewrite a whole section, so most SMR drives have a CMR (conventional magnetic recording, non-overlapping tracks) section to act as a buffera side effect of this is that (drive managed) SMR drives are usually fully indirect - that is, the ordering of the data as the computer sees it is completely unrelated to how it's actually ordered on the disc, like an SSDtreating it like an SSD by batching writes, not updating access time, and not bothering to try to avoid fragmentation helps with SMR performance, which does suffer compared to CMR drives with lots of random writes
