At least Musk isn't *purposely* making #Twitter harder for people to use overall. Here on #Mastodon, not making it easy is a stated goal of many users, literally to put hurdles into the onboarding process as a kind of "test" of Loyalty to the Federation -- talk about inane.

@nicepics13 That Federation had a lot of internal problems too.

@lauren I do not like loyalty tests, but I think we benefit from a participation cost and requiring a bit more skill than the average phone app.If something becomes too easy for the iPhone crowd, the entertainment-oriented audience comes in and swamps the knowledgeable. That is what happened on Twitter and Reddit after all.

@lauren Judaism and Zoroastrianism have similar features. Do Mastodon users feel like a persecuted minority in danger of being infiltrated by the enemy?

@lauren No place is perfect, I guess, but being better than current Twitter isn't hard :) However, since this is a community driven, open project, the main driver for the devs isn't "exponential user growth". This may be why the onboarding process looks the way it does. I trust that it will become easier over time. Building a robust network like this is hard work, with many competing priorities. Must say I agree with you on the silliness of debating it SHOULD be hard though...

@lauren so, some people are trying to be gatekeepers. They can't stop others.

@lauren Why are they not welcoming new users? Traditional hatred/fear of immigrants? Go back to where you came from?

@lou Twitter-user hatred, among other things.
