We need to develop some kind of a language around anti transage microaggressions, similar to what we have to talk about transphobic stuff. I saw some people use "mis-aging" in the pattern of "misgendering". Do you think it will catch on?

@comrade_lecter I doubt it, just because there’s such a wide spectrum of language surrounding age, and it varies massively from country to country. Also, I doubt we’ll ever get to a point in the near future where people are able to look past the inherent minor/adult divide and separate chronological and internal age. I think for most people, legality and fear of being perceived as a predator trumps individual comfort and identity, and that’s something that needs to be overhauled from the ground up.

@comrade_lecter I don't think it will catch on. How would people mis-age others in everyday life? Pronouns, by contrast, are difficult to avoid in English.

@shoulderdemon "when I was your age", "grow up", and similar comes to mind. Also getting called a boy vs a man, a girl vs a woman.

@thelostmind why? I want to have clear terminology for talking about something that distresses me. Because without words that are understood by more or less everyone in your social circle, you can't ask coherently for your boundaries to be respected.

@laura @shoulderdemon @comrade_lecter Not always, not everyone talks to people of different ages that differently.

@laura @comrade_lecter Thanks, I will need to pay attention to myself to see if I do this. I feel like as long as they have a decent grasp of language then I have no reason to speak differently based on age.

@thelostmind @shoulderdemon "microaggression" is a term that refers to small and subtle acts against another person, the ones that may be committed without a conscious intention to hurt, but still will be hurtful emotionally. E.g. a straight girl meets her classmates after the summer break, and she hugs every other girl except for the one that's a lesbian. This isn't open and violent bigotry, but it feels nasty on the receiving end nevertheless. The reason why the concept of microaggression exists is because people with stigmatized identities experience it much more often than open violence, may be multiple times a day in some cases. And long term constant minor jabs, being singled out from your group, being given colder treatment than everyone else, being intentionally forgotten and left out, receiving more tactless remarks, is just as harmful mentally as a singular violent attack.I live in a highly homophobic country, also, but that doesn't mean the only thing I should care about is physical violence. I still want my emotional needs accommodated.

@thelostmind @shoulderdemon yes, I live in Russia. But I don't think my desire to be seen as an individual person (as opposed to a collection of assumptions someone can make about me based on my physical body) is less than my desire to survive in general, because the only reason why I want to survive at all is because I want to have a life that's decent and enjoyable. If someone offered me a life where I'll never face any physical violence or material discrimination, but also everyone will always disregard who I am in favor of what they think I need to be, I wouldn't take it.
