@science_quotes Mind you, skepticism is over-rated. It already introduces bias.

@science_quotes The first definition of skepticism that came up when I just looked, included:"disposition to incredulity".A further problem is that people don't realise this."Demanding evidence"? "Demand" isn't very friendly, is it. That attitude itself says a lot. A theory has to explain the observations. An expert wouldn't need to be told the observations. ALSO... new theories DO NOT NECESSARILY NEED new evidence. To assume so presumes all past theorists have been perfect.

@science_quotes You're arguing with someone who's business it was to teach the process of discovering scientific knowledge, at uni. Anyone who's done that knows these "facts" come with probabilities.Facts are absolute...so no scientific knowledge is a fact.Needs an expert to judge a theory. Experts already know the "evidence" in the field so needn't demand evidence (which is observation(s) not well explained by at least one theory). And new theories DON'T always need new evidence.

@science_quotes You most recent reply noted. On the previous, I think we can leave it to the judgment of the individual reader as to whether a "disposition to incredulity" implies bias!π

@science_quotes Would be interesting to see the result of the poll! I would like to have a hand in structuring the question! Or contributing a question..?A crystallised form (i.e. on a single page) of my views on all this is in the top left pic in the 2nd pinned tweet (that should really be the firstπ ), dated Dec 14th, in my masto profile.A fuller account is in Chapter 2 "How Do We Know" of my book, the 1st 15% of which, inc. chap2, is available on Amazon at mybook.to/SecretDinobirdStory

@science_quotes Interesting! I would be interested to see the result! My vote was the 3rd π Of course one covers oneself by saying science does not or should not (more the latter really) work by democracy!π

@science_quotes Yes! So many complications involved there! The more I see of the sciences I'm involved with, the more it reminds me of the current political fiascos!π±
