OK, I'm using an #Apple Magic Keyboard with my #Kubuntu #Linux install (and also on my docked Steam Deck), but the keyboard technically doesn't have a DEL key, only a backspace key. I'm struggling to find a DEFINITIVE way to achieve a dedicated DEL function (something like Super or Option +Backspace?) since Reddit and Linux forums have roughly 3 dozen different ideas. What is YOUR solution? Thanks in advance for any help!

@killyourfm Does Fn+backspace not work as it does in macOS? I haven't tried an Apple keyboard with Linux, but that's the usual way.

@trezzer It doesn't! That's the first thing I tried, and I've never had to go into keyboard remapping in Linux before -- am a bit scared to try :D

@killyourfm I think shift+backspace or Ctrl+backspace acts like del, or maybe you can use https://github.com/kmonad/kmonad

@killyourfm I use Xev to identify the keys, and /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/evdev to edit the mapping. My internal keyboard came without a context menu key, so I converted the right ctrl to take on that function. You can also do a temporary remap with xmodmap -e but it doesn't survive a reboot. Clearly, this works in X. For Wayland, you can use setxkbmap.

@Ronnienissan Crazy, neither of those shortcuts work *in Thunderbird* so now I'm wondering if it's a Thunderbird problem. Thank you!

@killyourfm The HHKB keyboard layout is one of my favourites. It puts Del on Fn+Backspace, so I'd emulate that as Alt+Backspace. I try to limit Super to window management hotkeys.

@killyourfm You're welcome. Good luck with finding the solution right for you. With Linux, where there's a will, there's a way!

@killyourfm yeah, it seems like the editor has to implement the shortcut, I am using Gnomes global Emacs keys, that is why Ctrl+backspace works for me in Thunderbird.

@killyourfm keyd is great. Also allows you to do other cool things like caps lock as super when held and escape when tapped. But can definite just do a combo for DEL

@killyourfm glad to hear it! Fair warning, may become a rabbit hole and you will be consumed by multiple key optimization like me :) if you need any ideas or the like, don't hesitate to reach out

@killyourfm This is dumbest solution but I just remap the regular backspace key in whatever program I'm using :blobsmilesweat:
