@stux I have five teachers in the family. Teaching has become incredibly difficult but not because the kids have changed. Like in politics, the fringe has been given a megaphone and kids are always listening and emulating adults. Especially the whackos.Also, I found that many boys in their prepubescent years are fascinated by authoritarianism; the loudness, bulling, uniforms, the spectacle. Most outgrow it.

@stux I have a relative part of whose job is delivering tutorials to students of around 16 or so on equity and diversity. Recently they recounted running one on LGBTQ+ awareness - the lesson basically being little more than "Please don't be garbage humans at other people because they're LGBTQ+".Their face when they described the absolutely unbridled, undisguised and entirely conscious LGBTQ+ hate from the class... I could've cried just seeing that expression. 😞

@stux my son was in high school a few years back and this little shit stain kept muttering stuff under his breath about stuff like this in his history class. My son called him out in class and the teacher did nothing and constantly excused it as "difference of opinion" on everything. My son had it when the kid whispered "what can I say, I love Nazis." The teacher continued to do nothing so my son checked out and never went back to class. The teacher refused to meet with me and used "the union won't let us meet outside of school hours" as an excuse. It's not just the students.

I don’t recall a ton of people doing this openly in class for the whole class to hear, but it was certainly said among students. @stux In the 1970s, kids made my mom's high teacher cry by not believing the Night and Fog documentary. It wasn't internet edgelords, obviously, they sounded more like they genuinely couldn't believe it. I don't know why after the internet I am more surprised by reactions like this. @stux A friend of mine whose mother is a Cuban immigrant was a substitute teacher in West Virginia for a spell. One day in class, they heard students say that all immigrants should be rounded up and executed. When my friend complained to the school board, they were told nothing could be done. It makes me wonder if the original poster's school board has an anti-discrimination and hate speech policy and, more importantly, if it's being meaningfully enforced and what that looks like.

I want to echo the people who noted that video game communities are being exploited to push children towards all forms of bigotry. Picture an isolated kid: one with no friends and low self-esteem. When they queue up for a match, chances are one of the first people to be friendly with them will be a bad influence. The gamers who could have been a positive influence will have tended to wall themselves off into their own communities, where they can have a better experience.

@stux that's just a bad teacher example, nothing more. If, instead of doing their work they fell to a desperate, and say how spoiled the generation is, they should not teach. Go to the bathroom and cry there if you will, just do not work with children.

@stux Here in the Netherlands psychologists have come to the conclusion (or working hypothesis?) that due to the corona-lockdowns the youth are 1-2 years behind in their social development. In short: I'm teaching 16-18 year olds that behave as if they are 1-2 years younger. And mind you: they can't even be told or blamed. How could they know what they've missed while they were in lockdown?Yep, it's quite a conundrum.

@stux At one point when I was young I considered being a teacher. Then I taught class for a semester in college as I needed a credit. I also did some substitute teaching. I quickly decided education wasn't for me.

@stux I'm a 57 years old german. In my youth I had opportunities to talk with contemporary witnesses and I heard stories that chilled me to the bone.Like a women having a small company and her jewish workers were being deported. She went to the adminstration and said she needs these workers and they told her if she isn't quiet now, she'll also get deported. She never saw these workers again.It is much easier to lie to people now the witnesses have died.

@stux I have a number of friends who left teaching recently. They’ve experienced everything from overt racism to physical attacks. Between the lack of funding and zero support from the system they worked for they gave up.I don’t know where the next generation of teachers will come from .
