@kairyssdal I've had good luck using needles on balloons.

@kairyssdal come on, Kai, Raytheon had to get a little piece of the action, you know.

@kairyssdal You know the pilot wanted to utter these lines so badly: "Too close for missiles, switching to guns."

@kairyssdal Yeah, I thought so too, but then saw the elevation profile. The F-22 was at 58k when it shot the missile, and the balloon was at 66k. A missile can ascend 8k ft, but a cannon shot would need to be level and fairly close. I have no idea what the F-22 can do, but no matter how you cut it, that's high altitude business up there. I'm guessing they thought this through at Langley and figured out the best method.

@kairyssdal Only $300K or so for a missile. Cheap.

@kairyssdal Think they wanted to not only deflate it, but pop it, to be sure it'd come down in a region where they could retrieve it.

@kairyssdal Balloon was at really high altitude, I understand why they had to go with a missile.

@kairyssdal I'd defer to some real experts, but I've read they wanted to blow up the balloon, not just put a lot holes in it. That way the balloon's payload would go into shallow water facilitating recovery. With a bunch of holes it would just slowly descend eventually coming down in deeper (international) water instead of within (shallow) US waters.

@kairyssdal its a fifth generation air superiority balloon. The thrust vectoring makes them very hard to hit at range

@kairyssdal Question - does a 20mm canon round detonate when hitting the water from that altitude? Can a sidewinder be remote detonated if if fails to hit? Not having live rounds down range would seem to be a good idea but all beyond my skillset.

@kairyssdal With balloon at 63,000ft and F-22 at it's ceiling (58,000ft), even pointed straight up you're well outside the 'accurate' range of the M61A2 gun (2,000ft). An AIM-9X Block II can be steered by the F-22 pilot, with a range of over 20 miles...

@kairyssdal allegedly the balloon was above the service ceiling for the F-22 gun door. Stealth is weird.

@kairyssdal Probably would have been a gentler descent too, if the balloon had just been pierced instead of exploded.

@kairyssdal I would have thought a few cannon rounds through the balloon wound have maybe resulted in a softer landing as it came down? You could have secured and studied the contents of the balloon.
