If I buy a phone off eBay, what are the odds it's stolen? I don't want to give Google money.

@josh I once saw a "sell your phone" vending machine at walmart. Insert phone anonymously, collect cash. If you can figure out where those phones end up, you've got a 100 percent chance.

@josh eBay did a purge of certain shady sellers a few years back. All the highly rated sellers are going to be legit.Your best bet is to search a specific type of phone, then look for the sketchiest listing.

@josh Most of the ones that are listed as carrier and/or cloud locks are probably hot, but you'll have to flash or unlock.

@josh It's doesn't matter since phone was already bought at some point. It would matter only if it was stolen right from google factory.

@josh If the phone was stolen from a carrier they can blacklist it from connecting to a cellular network

@Slobberdog_Milosevic So if I look for a new Pixel that is listed as Carrier/Cloud Locked and flash it with GrapheneOS, it can accept new SIM cards just fine AND I can be sure that Google didn't get my money?

@josh @Slobberdog_Milosevic as long as the IMEI isn't blacklisted. if a phone is locked it's probably also reported stolen so the modems IMEI ends up in the national database. if you are outside of North America then the blacklist doesn't matter at all because most carriers don't uphold it

@josh I'd first suggest using Swappa or backmarket to just buy pre-owned that already has the Google Account removed so you wouldn't have to fuss with the loops or give Google money. Just flash and go. but if you buy a hot locked one you could use tools like 4uKey to get rid of the FRP/Google Cloud lock. The carrier blacklist I've generally outsourced through sites that specialize in, charge is usually like 10-15 bucks. I'm a year or two out from doing carrier unlock stuff, so could be dated.

@josh @Slobberdog_Milosevic If it was just stolen and immediately put to sale you'll probably have to bypass the Factory Reset Protection to flash Graphene . I got PTSD from doing it once because I was forced to watch a dozen videos of pajeets showing how to do it. Honestly refurb is a safer option, and I don't think refurbers pay royalties to the original manufacturer.

@josh Swappa is a good market for used phones, but I think they only use Paypal for payment. I don't know why you specifically want a stolen phone, buying any pre-owned phone is sending your money to the seller and not Google.

@SNESMAN99 @josh I like Swappa too. It's escrow but specialized so they know the tricks and details people are looking for. but yeah, Paypal stinks as a sole option. I think you can use Paypal guest and a credit card, they get a cut but at least you are tied up in their bullshit.

@josh @Slobberdog_Milosevic Carrier locked would be a risky buy, I would recommend against it. To unlock the bootloader on Pixels you need to first start up the default OS and it must have an online connection when you use the option in Developer Menu. This is actually getting permission from the carrier first. Most carriers want you to spend x amount of money before they will unlock it for you. Read grapheneos.org/faq

@josh a black lady once stole my mom's phone that she forgot in an airport bathroom.we know this because the retarded nigger took a selfie in the mirror to celebrate and it got backed up to icloud.unfortunately they all look the same so she was never apprehended.moral of the story: determine if the seller is black.
