@dave no amount of scientific gobbletygook can cover up the fact that the earth has been warmer and had much higher levels of CO2 in the past before recorded human historythe greenhouse effect of human-released CO2 does not have a huge impact on climate and endless discussions around this only detract from real environmental concerns. there are 1000 more important environmental issues to consider right now so you're actually being counter productive by shilling this idiotic talking point

@meowski @Nudhul What’s sad is that you can’t even explain how it works, which you established when you stated that you were confused by what she was saying just a few minutes into the video. That part of the video, by the way, is still the oversimplified version, which is apparently still beyond your grasp. Yet despite not even understanding a simplified version of how it’s supposed to work, you have instead spent more time than the length of the entire video sitting in this thread spouting off random facts you’ve heard, that you think debunk a concept that you don’t even understand.

@dave Ok so the radiation escapes from higher up and the heat further down on the atmosphere goes up to compensate. I get that the phenomenon is real, but wouldn't the added heat promote vegetative growth and through photosynthesis- use up that CO2 over time and bring down overall levels? Even if the CO2 is kept at the outer bounds of the atmosphere- the additional Oxygen produced by said plants would also equalize the gas levels at those outer extremities too?

@meowski @dave @Nudhul so true. Core samples from antarctic lakes also show that CO2 levels follow temperature changes, not the other way around.Audits of the HAD4 climate data set show that it is riddled with errors, bad methodology, and the only reason it shows incremental temperature change is because temps were deliberately set (not measured) 10-20 degrees C lower in cities prior to the use of asphalt because of estimation. There are also several outliers in the mid-1930s where ships reported temps in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius and their numbers are used straight up as is instead of converting systems.

@Marshall1Banana Yes, and rates of plant growth have increased due to higher CO2 concentrations, and they would help bring CO2 back down to pre-industrial levels. Note that it’s not linear though, and it’s going to take a loooong time for the CO2 to get taken out of the atmosphere naturally, which is why for a zero-CO2 scenario our future temp average forecast is relatively flat. Note that for the zero-GHG scenario we do actually see a drop initially, but that’s going to be primarily because of methane, which has a 12 year half-life roughly when in it’s in the atmosphere.

@dave I know it may be my libertarian priors speaking, but wouldn't it make more sense then to find another industrial alternative to resolving the problem of methane and CO2 pollution then, like capturing and using it?I'm so hesitant to immediately go to zero-CO2 as an individual mandate specifically because it's seems like a top-down policy where people are asked to go without or simply have lower standards of living imposed upon them by governing bodies and institutions rather than innovate an effective solution

Dr. Haasenpfeffer's explanation misses the mark, anyway. The greenhouse analogy is entirely appropriate, with the gasses taking the part of the glass in a greenhouse -- scattering IR and sending some of it back down. What the paid-for 'climate science' gets wrong is that H₂O is also a greenhouse gas, which scatters a lot more IR than CO₂, which is a minor contributor. If not for the water vapor, we'd have that cold planet she mentions just before I stopped the vid. What the assholes who manipulate the news are really concerned about is resource depletion. You know, Club of Rome's 'Limits to Growth' and Malthus' ruminations from 200 years ago. They want to stamp out carbon burning by all you plebes, so they can cheaply fuel their private jets into the next century.

@Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana When a massive volcano eruption happens, global temperatures don’t rise, they drop, because the soot that has been thrown high into the atmosphere blocks more energy than is captured through slightly higher CO2 concentrations. This, by the way, is why about a quarter of climate papers from the 1970s when the field was still young were predicting temperatures would drop, not rise, because some scientists believed the cooling effect from the aerosols we were putting out would outweigh the warming from CO2 increasing the strength of the greenhouse effect.

@Heil_Honkler @dave @Marshall1Banana It's also silly that they begin with the belief that co2 leads to higher temperatures, but when you look at temperature changes and match them with atmospheric co2 levels since the younger dryas, it's shown the co2 follows the temperature. And during what WAS known as the climatic optimum, co2 and global temperature was higher than it is now. During the medieval warm period there was so much new arable land that Europe's population exploded, leisure and education increased, life expectancy and the height of people increased and cathedral and mass building practices went into full swing. After about 300 years of this, the little ice age occurred and all of that stopped. We've been "warming" since this time, since before the industrial revolution. In the 1930s to 40s we had a large increase in heat waves and droughts, and in the 70s-80s we cooled so much, they were warning about a return to another little ice age. It matters how you look at the data and how far back you look to really understand how they've manipulated this data.

@Dr_Tetanus @Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana Not sure if you’re basing this claim on the common misunderstanding of how Ice Age cycles work where the initial rise in temperature precedes the rise in CO2, or if you’re referring to that one 2013 paper that shows CO2 concentrations lagging sea surface temps, but it’s still incorrect to claim that CO2 doesn’t drive global temperature changes.

Sorry, I'll have to continue to agree with Meowski on this one. I have seen some of her other videos, explaining 'what is a neutrino' or 'how does quantum mechanics work', in simplified language for the great unwashed, and this is just more of that popular science. Arrhenius did some of the first calculations, and opined that it might be a good thing if Sweden wasn't so damn cold, and no one has really changed the science since then. Sweden is still cold, by the way. This topic was one of the areas where I first noticed the peer review process being corrupted, starting decades ago. Anyone who pointed out deficiencies of the latest 'theory' would be reviled as a crackpot, while the most extreme predictors were treated like royalty. Carl Sagan said it would be like Venus, i.e. hot enough to melt lead. Or maybe gallium... The eminent polymath Al Gore predicted that the poles would be ice-free, umm, some time. And since the turn of the millineum all science is a conspiracy theory, on so many topics. I think they chose this woman because diversity, and also because a thick German accent sounds more 'sciencey'.

@dave @Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana Co2 is one component that has very little to do with the global increase in climatic temperatures. The entirety of the holocene shows this. There's centuries of warming and cooling periods and there are pockets of decades within these periods that are warmer or cooler than the average. The climatic optimum is the biggest refutation of co2 being the biggest problem, or that humans have any real affect. And in fact higher levels of co2 correlates to an explosion of life and in more modern times correlates to a higher standard of living for us. But as far as co2 driving global temperature, you just have to look phanerozoic co2 vs temperature graphs. The only time there's any real uniformity is the carboniferous ice age.

@hazlin @Nero @Marshall1Banana It probably won’t get better, because he’s wrong and that’s just going to make him seethe more. Krakatoa likely put out something on the order of tens of millions of tons of CO2. Every year we put out around 30 billion. While there have been volcanoes that have put out enough CO2 to measurably impact the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, any eruption big enough to do that doesn’t warm the planet, it cools it, because the soot in the atmosphere blocks more energy than would be retained by the extra CO2.

@PatriotReactor @Dr_Tetanus @Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana Every Independent Thinker™ always makes the same reference to volcanic eruptions as a major CO2 source because they heard it somewhere and it it sounded like a good argument, and you are the third person today to make this same argument. The problem with this “gotcha” is that it’s wrong. Volcanoes average somewhere on the order of hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 emissions annually. We put out about 30 billion tons.

@1967GTO @Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana CO2 was already a major point of concern when the hole in the ozone was discovered. The “CFCs are destroying the ozone” was a much simpler and easier fix: pass legislation banning the production of those substances, and replace outdated equipment with a different refrigerant that doesn’t destroy the ozone. We passed the legislation, we switched to a refrigerant that doesn’t destroy the ozone. And the reason we don’t talk about it much anymore is because we already solved the problem, the ozone is slowly healing, we just have to wait it out. Same with “muh acid rain”, another talking point that Independent Thinkers™ commonly trot out, because they’re not aware that the problem was already solved as well.

@dave yeah but factories and other mass CO2 generating side effects of industrialization have only been around for what 300 years? So a counter argument to what youre proposing is that - even without such human initiated processes - global warning should have been happening due to vulcanicity alone, and its effects should be compounded by us adding 10 times the CO2 to the atmosphere consistently for the last few years. But that’s objectively untrue. There is no trend with CO2 output. There is more a trend with solar cycles.Human generated CO2 has no measurable impact on climate change.Climate changes on its own e.g. we had an ice age, and then it ended - and not because some Neanderthals kept themselves warm with campfire@PatriotReactor @Dr_Tetanus @Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana

@KonataWagner @sparky @11112011 @PatriotReactor @Dr_Tetanus @Heil_Honkler @Marshall1Banana Agreed, but they weren’t anywhere near as efficient at harvesting wind energy as modern turbines are. Buildings are a different story because we could switch to standards that preserve the look of older architecture while still taking advantage of modern materials and building practices, but you can’t have windmills that look like they came out of the 1700s while still being as efficient at harvesting energy as something that came out in the 2000s.

@dave @meowski @Nudhul > transition to EVsNot only are these things environmental disasters, but "people in cars" is a drop in the bucket compared to industrial use. It's like that stupid "paper straw" thing, or solving the water problem out here by turning everyone's yard brown. The actual effect of clamping down on industry, though, is to push manufacturing out of countries with heavy environmental regulation and into places where there's zero. (Remember: symmetrical tariffs are racist.) You don't solve any "global" problems, you just shuffle them. You push this stuff here, and another coal plant starts up in Vietnam, another chemical processing plant in Bangalore decides to burn its waste plastic, another Brazilian company dumps another load of atrazine into the water (and another batch of friggin' frogs become gay). The excessive regulations in California's marijuana market have kept the black market alive and well, and they're growing that shit with DDT and paraquat and all the other things that you can't use but that someone that pays more bribes than fines absolutely can.Speaking of Bangalore: https://www.theguardian.com/world/gallery/2015/oct/01/lake-toxic-foam-bangalore-india-in-pictures .Anyone knows that this is the effect. Maybe some of them are chasing the feel-good environmental vote. Maybe some of it's sustained momentum from Agenda 21 (which everyone treats like a conspiracy theory, but here it is: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/outcomedocuments/agenda21/ ). Maybe some of it's kickbacks from overseas businesses and politicians that expect to pick up the business. I'm sure it's crazy to point out that all of the politicians that openly welcome the end of US economic dominance are also pushing this stuff, I'm probably some tinfoil lunatic for noticing that.

@p @meowski @Nudhul The problem here is that the greenhouse effect is complicated, and most of the people in this thread don’t even understand how it works, so they’re spouting off random facts that they think disprove something they don’t even really understand. The reason it’s important to watch and understand the whole video, is not only that it gives you a much clearer understanding of how the greenhouse effect actually works, but also what it preps you for at the end: stratospheric cooling, which was predicted to happen on the basis of how CO2 traps heat, but that there was no direct evidence for at the time the prediction was made. Think of Einstein’s relativity predicting gravity would warp spacetime, and thus you should see a very slight lensing effect around the periphery of the sun, which with the technology at the time could only be observed during an eclipse. It’s not something you could have known would happen unless your model was correct. Same with stratospheric cooling.

@dave @meowski @Nudhul > The problem here is that the greenhouse effect is complicated, and most of the people in this thread don’t even understand how it worksYeah, but you're saying that to meowski, who definitely does. (I also don't think it's that complicated, but if you're making a case, you have to make the case instead of repeating "Just watch the video".) I certainly don't agree with all of the things he has to say, but it's a mistake to assume that people that disagree don't understand it.This kind of thing has consistently been used for alarmist predictions: New York was supposed to be underwater by 2010, several feet below sea level, but apparently the ocean is exactly where it was before, the average elevation of New York remains at 66 feet above sea level, Venice Beach (in California) is still a fun place to hang out, the biggest danger to the city of Venice (in Italy) is still erosion, and coastal real estate prices remain high. Nobody pushing that particular agenda has anything to say about the models' failures. I think it's beyond contest that the risks have been exaggerated to an absurd degree, and you should probably expect pushback.> The reason it’s important to watch and understand the whole videoIt's information. If you understand the information, you can discuss it. I get these things from all kinds of people, right, some nazzy says that some 40-minute video proves the Holocaust didn't happen, and then the first two minutes of it look like all the shit I've ever heard from them, and I don't plan to sit through 40 minutes of it, then they start insisting that I've ignored the information because it is blowing my mind. Same goes for anything. Vegans with gore-porn of slaughterhouses, pedos trying to make their cases, anything. It's not anything I don't do myself: if I've got a point to make, I try to make the point, I don't need to tell them to sit through a video. Sometimes I don't want to discuss it, so I'll refer them somewhere (sometimes to my own previous remarks), but there's no point in trying to continue to make the argument without actually making it. It's the difference between a citation and just spamming links. Just pushing a video is basically engaging in propaganda, even if the video is correct: you're here, you're a live human, I'm a live human, and either we're engaging or we're just inflexible mouthpieces for someone else's agenda. Someone sent me this link a long time back, on the topic of what killed Usenet: https://reaction.la/security/social_networking.html . (There's some discussion at https://freespeechextremist.com/notice/AJlIiUGktJ8wvxS7FI .) Here's the relevant paragraph:> Conversations became one man with one microphone attached to a thousand megaphones, and replying was like talking back to the national news broadcast, because you could reply to a shill, but the man giving the shill her script was not listening, because he was running a hundred similar shills, and his shill would just stick to her script, the script he had assigned to her no matter what you replied to her script. That's the problem, you know what I mean? I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but the end result is the same: either it's a conversation or it's a broadcast, and if it's someone *else's* broadcast, what's the point?> It’s not something you could have known would happen unless your model was correct. It's funny you'd mention Einstein: Newtonian physics made a large number of successful predictions and took centuries to find problems with. Was it proven to be correct? No, it wasn't, because that's not how science works. Feynman's turning in his grave. You ever watch his lectures? They're on the Internets now, this was from one of his guest lectures at Harvard, he takes some pains to clear up the misconception that a model *can* be proven correct. You can't do this. You can prove a model *incorrect*, and you can build up a heuristic, some given model hasn't been disproved yet, it's successfully predicted this or that, so it's a valid model for now.You only need to find one black swan to successfully demonstrate that "There are no black swans" is false, but you can't prove that it's true by sitting in the park and saying "Yeah, see? Another white swan." What we have, for *any* model, is just "It worked so far". By their nature, there will be things we know to be true that can't be accounted for in the model, and that's any model. This is the inextricable nature of models: it's what the word means. So that was my point: "Just watch the video" is the worst way to do this. If I'd said "Just go watch Feynman's lectures" instead of answering you, it wouldn't be a conversation.> stratospheric cooling, which was predicted to happen on the basis of how CO2 traps heatThis would be a white swan, but the thing being modeled here is what effect carbon dioxide has; this is completely orthogonal to where the carbon dioxide came from, how bad the effect will be given the system as-is (that is, most of these models rely on everything else staying relatively constant). We had a very CO₂-rich atmostphere millions of years ago: why did that stop? Where is the carbon now? What if that happens again? Can we *make* it happen again? What are the boundaries of this model?

@p @meowski @Nudhul Yeah, but you’re saying that to meowski, who definitely does.He called it “nonsensical jibberish” and said he only got through the first few minutes of the video, which by the way is only going over the overly-simplified explanation of how the effect works, which tells you that it absorbs and reflects some IR energy back to the surface that otherwise would have escaped into space. That is not “nonsensical jibberish” to anyone who understands how it’s supposed to work.Anyways, you can’t convince a motherfucker biased and gullible enough to fall for the “volcanoes emit more CO2 than we do” claim by presenting claims that supports the notion of AGW, even when those claims do have a good basis, because he’s going to respond with another one of his volcano-tier counterfactuals. I just had this exact thing happen 10 minutes ago when the same guy that dropped the volcanoes line pivoted to claiming that we’d need way more lithium than exists to replace ICE cars, which is another bogus claim these retards commonly trot out. You’re assuming that these people are rational and, provided the evidence countering their beliefs has a stronger basis, are amenable to having their minds changed. They aren’t.New York was supposed to be underwater by 2010True, alarmists have made baseless claims like this that of course didn’t come true. Here’s the thing though: the actual scientists knew they were baseless, and also pointed this out if asked. You can pop open the IPCC’s AR3 technical summary, which was published in 2001, and see that at the time the science indicated that, even under the worst feasible scenario, sea levels would only rise by around 0.8 meters by 2100, which certainly isn’t putting any cities underwater by 2010.Alarmists do their spin, but the actual science doesn’t make such ridiculous predictions. The claims about NYC potentially being underwater was not considered a credible prediction by scientists even at the time it was made. You can do this for basically any of these “failed predictions”, and if you pop open the most current version of the IPCC’s reporting at the time they were made, you will almost certainly find that the projections at the time were a lot more modest and reasonable.

@meowski @w0rm @Nudhul dave, there’s a reason people keep saying this.Yes, it’s because they’re stupid. First off, at least two of them explicitly claimed that normal volcanic activity exceeds our emissions, and a third implied it. One even claimed that Krakatoa released more CO2 than humans have in our entire history, which is just 🤦♂️ But to address the steelman of their comments, the implication there is that because apocalyptic events have happened in the past, and whether they happen again may be outside of our control, we aren’t supposed to do anything about AGW, something that is within our control, and is happening right now (not apocalyptic probably, but still catastrophic and costly), is silly.

Watch the good virologist here, from the time marker for about 5 minutes: https://invidious.poast.org/8jDqUcnBotk?t=2232 ... at least until the ocean-carbon-cycle slide. I'm pretty sure he recorded this lecture series before he got the memo from Fauci or whoever. I watched them back in 2020, along with his 'podcast' program TWIV. On one of the TWIV shows, he awkwardly read a statement calling for more 'diversity' in science. The following week they had a colored woman from HHS, who obviously knew nothing about molecular biology nor any related topic. The diversity sheboon was not a regular, but after that they stuck to the official narrative on SARS-Cov-2, although they've continued to discuss other viruses...If you have some understanding of biochemistry, I recommend the entire lecture series, all 25 of 'em. The bottom line is, none of these wannabe weather forecasters, including our Teutonic science bitch up there, have any idea where the climate is headed.

@meowski @w0rm @Nudhul You’re throwing out red herrings again. While p is out here trying to stick up for you, you just keep confirming that you really don’t understand how the greenhouse effect works. Also, any form of “shit was way more different X thousand/million years ago, therefore what’s happening now is fine” is a retarded argument. The mass species die-offs, increased extreme weather events, and rapid (on geologic timescales) loss of coastal and/or arable land are still going to cause a lot of human suffering regardless of the fact that 20,000 years ago the earth was a frozen tundra, 65 million years ago it had most of its life wiped out, and 100 million years ago it was a tropical jungle.

Or, at least it would have if it was me making the claim. I can’t say I have much faith in your ability to make logical connections considering you’re a guy that walked into this thread unironically claiming that volcanic CO2 emissions are significant enough to make trying to reduce human CO2 emissions pointless. Or that you claimed we would need billions of tons of lithium to replace ICE cars in the first place, for that matter.

@w0rm @dave @meowski @Nudhul Everyone having cars is stupid. In the long run, personal ownership will fade. And if I have my way, the roads will be gone too and we’ll hang personal rapid transit (PRT) from a rail above ground. PRT runs without batteries but for a small amount for emergency use and need not use lithium. Of course, this won’t happen just like we won’t stop climate change. The earth will be fine. It’s us that are in trouble.

hyperloop is absurdly expensive, dangerous, and prone to breakdown vs regular high speed rail for a comparatively small gain in speed. even if it is possible in theory I find the idea that a country that can't even build modern rail, let alone modern high speed rail transportation could ever build it and it would be a waste of money if they did.People lecturing about individual action are full of shit and doing it for themselves or they've been psyopped. that kind of thing doesn't really matter. unless you are a faggot who uses a f350 solely to commute from the suburbs to your cushy office job. then you should kill yourself. that has less to do with climate and more to do with the fact you're a menace to everyone around you tho

most people buying those things are going into not insignificant debt to buy a depreciating asset that don't make practical use of plus there's fuel costs. 100% bad with money unless they're filthy rich.Being so worried about your truck you're afraid to use it for what its ostensibly designed for is definitely vain lol. These trucks are significantly more dangerous for both the occupants as well as all other road users compared to most other automobiles so if you're utilizing one in the manner i described you either don't care (lack empathy) or you're too stupid to know this (low iq)

@dave This isn't any new information. Climate models are still highly speculative. There's no way that scientists can claim (with any certainty) the things they're claiming (with certainty). Add to that that the claims they're making are highly sensationalized, politicized, and have clear ulterior motives behind them (for example preventing the third world from advancing beyond subsistence farming) and it makes the whole enterprise extremely suspect.

@featherFag @meowski @p @Nudhul @animeirl Sure, but then that brings us to minivans, and smaller trucks like the Ranger and Maverick, which 98% of the time will do the “truck” job just as well for most people. For example, of the people that do towing, how often is it going to be something you couldn’t have hauled with a Ranger or maybe a Pacifica?Obviously there are aesthetic/social signaling reasons as well. But most F-150 owners probably don’t ever really do jobs that justify them having bought a full-size truck. And you are rightly pointing out that for a lot they can at least provide some justification, but I think it’s also fair to say that most of them are driving around with more truck than they really need.

@daveThat argument is essentially 'I saw a snowflake today, global warming is a hoax'.And yes, I've given up on a good number of people that I, a decade ago, considered generally smart and capable people who has since then shown themselves unwilling to follow rational reasoning because it pointed in ideologically 'unpleasant' directions. Most of them, oddly enough, ended up being a mixture of covid skeptics, anti-vaxxers and Russia supporters over the past three years.@meowski @p @Nudhul

that's too abstract. I only judge people for stuff that's immediate to them w/r/t empathy. in addition to there being plenty of research the fact that these big trucks are more dangerous is self-evident if you have a basic intuitive understanding of physics, which as a human, you should since it's built in.

I mean people drive motorcycles which are far more dangerous for themselves but I don’t think you could say they’re all retarded. i also don't think it's an argument to say "well lots of people don't care about this so it's not a sign of low empathy" it should be obvious at this point that Americans have a huge problem w being incredibly shitty to one another and our culture trains people to act like sociopaths. @dave @meowski @Nudhul > He called it “nonsensical jibberish” and said he only got through the first few minutes of the videoThe fact that he dismissed it doesn't mean he's wrong, it's got no bearing on anything. Unless that video presents novel research, there is nothing in it that can't be gotten elsewhere. It's on Youtube and it's "Important" so it probably is "I fucking love science"-style nonsensical gibberish. (I didn't need to watch much of "The Dead Don't Die" to know it was a shit movie.) Unless your case is "this is a good video" rather than the broader point you seem to be making about the climate, the video is irrelevant.> which tells you that it absorbs and reflects some IR energy back to the surface that otherwise would have escaped into spaceHe said that's a valid point that he wouldn't contest. I don't think anyone's arguing against that.> Anyways, you can’t convince a motherfucker biased and gullible enough to fall for the “volcanoes emit more CO2 than we do” claimUseless claim in either direction unless you can quantify it. Have you quantified it?> because he’s going to respond with another one of his volcano-tier counterfactualsSome people, sure, maybe; I don't believe it to be the case here. I tell you this guy's not a rando-tier idiot, I've known him for years. He's not even running Soapbox.> I just had this exact thing happen 10 minutes ago when the same guy that dropped the volcanoes line pivoted to claimingLike this Soapbox user you're talking about. (I did look at the thread before I started rambling.)> You’re assuming that these people are rationalI'm telling you that a guy, a specific guy I know, is knowledgeable and rational.> True, alarmists have made baseless claims like this that of course didn’t come true.I did say that alarmist claims have been made, not that the claims were made by alarmists. That one about New York came from the U.N.; I'd call it alarmist propaganda (because it is), but I wouldn't say that they are generally alarmist.> Here’s the thing though: the actual scientists knew they were baselessThen it seems like it's better to read the research than to care about a Youtube video. This is kind of my point. The video is one arbitrary description of the map, the research is the map, the universe is the territory. The video doesn't matter. Calling the video gibberish has no bearing on the map, and the map is just an imperfect reflection of the territory. It's hard to dismiss research, it's easy to dismiss some rando on Youtube. Declaring that someone must not understand something because they declined to watch a video that describes something they already know is going to be wrong more often than you expect.

@animeirl @meowski @dave @Nudhul > a country that can't even build modern railMaybe you mean commuter rail systems. It's not a question of "can", though, it's a matter of whether or not it's worth it. For shipping, sure, but for most applications of rail, the US is a ridiculously sparse country. Japan has about half the US population crammed into a land mass slightly smaller than California, and people in most of the country still have yards. (Tokyo does have a really cool train system, though. If you avoid it during rush hour, it's nice.)I actually took a train across the country once. (Los Angeles to Little Rock, most of the distance.) For travel between big, nearby cities, maybe it's workable, but in general, not really. Travel within big cities, sure, but where it's worth it, there are usually already trains.

older suburbs were designed with the idea people will do a large amount of their "living" (eg shopping, entertainment, not just sleeping) in the neighborhood and commute to the city for work via transit so there are more amenities and more mixed development so while there are still a lot of single family homes (suitable for raising a family but not quite as big as modern american homes) there are more townhomes, *-plexes, condos and apartments mixed in or nearby. They are built (or in the US, were built) without the expectation that everyone will own a car or drive every single day so things are more dense and easily navigable. narrower roads (and as a result safer) with slower moving traffic, grid layout, etc. I live in one now and it's quite nice even though the streetcar was unfortunately replaced with an inconsistent bus line decades ago. It's kind of funny because it's actually quieter here than my parents house in suburbia since there's no gigantic arterial for people to bomb down at 55mph half a mile away

addendum: one reason things are denser is there isn't as much land dedicated to parking since parking minimum zoning laws weren't a thing when they were built. If you look at the amount of land dedicated exclusively to auto infrastructure and storage on google maps or something in a modern american suburb it's kind of insane

@p @meowski @Nudhul @animeirl You are constantly taking advantage of the speed of your CPU, even if most of the time between your inputs it is sitting idle, since it’s responding to your inputs and doing your bidding infinitely more quickly, thus also enhancing your productivity. Plus your CPU is going to get that work done with a lot less energy.A better analogy would be a gamer without a technical or content creation job, who thinks maybe he’d like to do some programming or something, so he does a 32-core threadripper build with 128GB of RAM. Yeah, there are a few instances where he will end up taking advantage of the massive core count, but in most instances having a Threadripper will make no difference to him.

Okay that data did not say the majority of people use it as a luxury vehicle. It says they’ve gone pleasure driving in their truck before. That doesn’t mean they don’t use their truck for it’s actual purposes. There is more to trucking than just towing. I can count on both hands the amount of times I’ve towed something but I haul shit constantly. I’ll concede obviously most people who have a big truck aren’t out there using it to tow things though.

@p @meowski @Nudhul @animeirl A new CPU performs what you ask of it in a fraction of a time, and using a fraction of the energy, compared to an ancient one. If trucks also arrived at their destination 10x quicker in addition to their other benefits, I would not think anyone was being wasteful by owning one.A better analogy might be if I, as a guy that doesn’t do any serious coding or content creation, but that occasionally thinks about getting into it, spent thousands extra on a Threadripper build with 32 cores or something. Outside of a handful of cases where I’m compressing or decompressing something, or maybe in very specific gaming scenarios like a Dyson Sphere Program save with a massive and complex logistics network, it’s not going to feel faster than if I just bought an 8-core, and buying based on speculation that I might in the future choose to start doing stuff that takes advantage of it, when I know I’m not currently, would be a waste of money.

@p @animeirl @HalTurner @meowski @Paulo @Nudhul Yeah, a lack of empathy and an implication of being low-IQ requires that the guy in a truck be an aggressive driver prone to road rage, not simply that he chose to purchase a truck. The logical conclusion of this argument is that everyone that doesn’t need to regularly haul more than 4 people or a lot of cargo around, needs to be driving a Mitsubishi Mirage or something similar, and if you get anything bigger or more luxurious, it’s an indication that you are probably low-IQ and somewhat lacking in empathy.

It kind of irks me: I don't care what most people think, most people aren't in this thread. I'm not talking to them, I'm talking to you guys. Besides that, if every living human believes something, then it still doesn't alter reality. Some ill-defined group of "most of the people that disagree with me" has nothing to do with whether what you are saying is correct or not. If you get sued and you tell the judge "The people suing me are retarded!" then the judge will, I'm fairly certain, respond that it has nothing to do with the facts of the case.

@animeirl @meowski @dave @Nudhul > people dont even use these trucks that much for industryI mean that if you take all of the inefficiencies of all the vehicles you don't like and wave them so they're gone (say all of these people's Chevy Suburbans turned into Priuses before they went to Starbucks), it's still within roundoff for whatever emission you come up with. You know about the billboard trucks, right? The ones that are just a truck with a billboard attached, paid to drive around in high-traffic areas during traffic jams? If you got rid of those, not even counting the reduction in congestion on the streets, that's eliminating 90 F150-trips to Starbucks per day per billboard.

I don't know what dr. sabine does besides videos, but i am convinced that a 'memo' went around, as i said in my virologist comment above... most filks in cushy jobs will toe the line. Rebels like Robert Malone or Peter McCullough are punished and made examples of. the global warming story has been running for decades... Carl Sagan, Al Gore, etc. are all suddenly on par with Svante Arrhenius. I think sabine got the memo and is toeing the line.

@animeirl @HalTurner @meowski @dave @Nudhul Think I'd rather get exiled to Siberia than live in New York. $8 for a Red Bull, nobody has milk to put into the cofe, just CoffeeMate, which is goddamn horrific, it's an abomination. It smells awful, the city actually reeks: being outside you get the feeling of being in a room with no ventilation. Like double LA's cop:human ratio, too. Completely fucked place. Some random guy followed me for a block trying to get me to smoke weed with him and I told him I was on the phone and I don't smoke weed and he refused to acknowledge, then he asked some fat chick that was sitting on the sidewalk and she said "I don't smoke weed, just crack" and he's comes back and starts lamenting at me that "No one in this city smokes weed!" and I don't know what to do with that. And the Chinese food was total shit, I'm not even sure that it was Chinese or food. And people wear three-piece suits there? At night? To eat Chinese food? The only good thing that happened was there was a kebab guy, and I'm pretty sure I could buy kebabs anywhere on earth. Fuck New York.

@not_br549 @meowski @p @Nudhul While Malone shouldn’t have been suspended, he certainly didn’t make much effort to correct the people claiming he was the inventor of mRNA vaccines either, which he wasn’t, and he knew he wasn’t.The fallacy in your reasoning here is pretty standard for Independent Thinkers™: I can dismiss any assertion that challenges my views as long as I can identify that assertion as being consistent with “the establishment”.You don’t need to identify anything wrong with anything said, because that would require that you actually understand what is being said (which you probably don’t), figure out what part of it is wrong, and refute the part you’ve identified as wrong, which you can’t do, because refuting what is asserted in this video is beyond your ability. Instead, you just reply with the presumption that what you’re replying to must be wrong because it’s establishment 🙄

@dave @meowski @Nudhul @animeirl > You are constantly taking advantage of the speed of your CPU,This is incorrect. There's a finite amount of work to do and a deadline. If you underclock your CPU, you can barely tell until you give it something large to chew on. Under a heavy workload, 90%(!) of the time busy-waiting for the memory bus, usually burning cycles doing some undesirable spec-ex.> since it’s responding to your inputs and doing your bidding infinitely more quicklyLatency is actually worse than it's ever been, especially since all the input devices now live on the Universal Serial Bus. (It's worse than that if you use Bluetooth, especially since the Blueteeth controller often lives on the USB, an extra hop.) Very far from "keypress generates a hardware interrupt immediately"; grab an ancient machine and try it.> there are a few instances where he will end up taking advantage of the massive core countMore cores actually make the memory bus contention worse. k/OS runs single-core because memory bus contention is poisonous to low-latency applications.

@dave @animeirl @HalTurner @meowski @Paulo @Nudhul > aggressive driver prone to road rageThat is, I think, impulse control rather than empathy, but there was a study some years back that found a link between aggressive driving and the number of bumper stickers, regardless of what the bumper stickers said. The reasoning was that the higher your drive to add group-identifiers, the more likely you'd be to care that people were blocking "your' lane, etc.> The logical conclusion of this argument is that everyone that doesn’t need toThe presumption that it's acceptable to be the arbitrator of what someone else *needs* absolutely reeks of authoritarianism. @p @meowski @Nudhul @animeirl This is incorrect. There’s a finite amount of work to do and a deadline. If you underclock your CPU, you can barely tell until you give it something large to chew on. Under a heavy workload, 90%(!) of the time busy-waiting for the memory bus, usually burning cycles doing some undesirable spec-ex.We are comparing your modern CPU to an ancient one, not to your modern CPU when it’s undervolted. You are constantly taking advantage of the speed of your modern CPU, and would receive regular reminders that you were running an ancient CPU if for whatever reason you chose to do so.Latency is actually worse than it’s ever beenAn ancient computer will feel much slower, even if some standards had latency that was a few milliseconds lower at the time. The modern computer responds faster, periodt.More cores actually make the memory bus contention worse. k/OS runs single-core because memory bus contention is poisonous to low-latency applications.Ok, but what is this actually refuting? I said that building a workstation as a normie that can’t presently use the cores is stupid, and that this is a better analogy to what buying a truck that you don’t really need is like. As opposed to the ancient CPU analogy, which I don’t think works because an ancient CPU does actually bottleneck you, whereas going for a minivan or smaller truck doesn’t.

@animeirl @HalTurner @meowski @dave @Paulo @Nudhul You're totally right, I can't wait to have new boots to lick. So presumably you'll be figuring in things like which roads one takes and the annual mileage. After all, a two-ton vehicle on the freeway 20 hours per week is less strain on the infrastructure than a four-ton vehicle that is on dirt roads for one hour a week. Hey, why stop at the roads? Let's install meters to weigh your shits to see how much of the sewer you're straining, then people can fill out exemption forms if there are extenuating circumstances, like you let a homeless guy use your toilet. Let's add some cameras to street lights to see who's using the most of the light. Let's tax people every time they call the cops, then let's tax anyone whose house catches fire due to their utilization of the fire department, and let's not forget the roads: the fire trucks are heavy, but if your house caught fire, it's only fair that you be taxed for that wear and tear on the road. Of course, if your genes predispose you to cancer of some sort, congenital heart defects, etc., we should tack on a tax in the event you reproduce: your offspring will be a burden on the healthcare system. And, you know, all this bookkeeping we'll have to do isn't free: let's tax people for that, too.parasite.jpg

I was shooting heroin and reading “The Fountainhead” in the front seat of my privately owned police cruiser when a call came in. I put a quarter in the radio to activate it. It was the chief.“Bad news, detective. We got a situation.”“What? Is the mayor trying to ban trans fats again?”“Worse. Somebody just stole four hundred and forty-seven million dollars’ worth of bitcoins.”The heroin needle practically fell out of my arm. “What kind of monster would do something like that? Bitcoins are the ultimate currency: virtual, anonymous, stateless. They represent true economic freedom, not subject to arbitrary manipulation by any government. Do we have any leads?”“Not yet. But mark my words: we’re going to figure out who did this and we’re going to take them down … provided someone pays us a fair market rate to do so.”“Easy, chief,” I said. “Any rate the market offers is, by definition, fair.”He laughed. “That’s why you’re the best I got, Lisowski. Now you get out there and find those bitcoins.”“Don’t worry,” I said. “I’m on it.”I put a quarter in the siren. Ten minutes later, I was on the scene. It was a normal office building, strangled on all sides by public sidewalks. I hopped over them and went inside.“Home Depot™ Presents the Police!®” I said, flashing my badge and my gun and a small picture of Ron Paul. “Nobody move unless you want to!” They didn’t.“Now, which one of you punks is going to pay me to investigate this crime?” No one spoke up.“Come on,” I said. “Don’t you all understand that the protection of private property is the foundation of all personal liberty?”It didn’t seem like they did.“Seriously, guys. Without a strong economic motivator, I’m just going to stand here and not solve this case. Cash is fine, but I prefer being paid in gold bullion or autographed Penn Jillette posters.”Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didn’t care that a fortune in computer money invented to buy drugs was missing.I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes indoors. A pregnant lady coughed, and I told her that secondhand smoke is a myth. Just then, a man in glasses made a break for it.“Subway™ Eat Fresh and Freeze, Scumbag!®” I yelled.Too late. He was already out the front door. I went after him.“Stop right there!” I yelled as I ran. He was faster than me because I always try to avoid stepping on public sidewalks. Our country needs a private-sidewalk voucher system, but, thanks to the incestuous interplay between our corrupt federal government and the public-sidewalk lobby, it will never happen.I was losing him. “Listen, I’ll pay you to stop!” I yelled. “What would you consider an appropriate price point for stopping? I’ll offer you a thirteenth of an ounce of gold and a gently worn ‘Bob Barr ‘08’ extra-large long-sleeved men’s T-shirt!”He turned. In his hand was a revolver that the Constitution said he had every right to own. He fired at me and missed. I pulled my own gun, put a quarter in it, and fired back. The bullet lodged in a U.S.P.S. mailbox less than a foot from his head. I shot the mailbox again, on purpose.“All right, all right!” the man yelled, throwing down his weapon. “I give up, cop! I confess: I took the bitcoins.”“Why’d you do it?” I asked, as I slapped a pair of Oikos™ Greek Yogurt Presents Handcuffs® on the guy.“Because I was afraid.”“Afraid?”“Afraid of an economic future free from the pernicious meddling of central bankers,” he said. “I’m a central banker.”I wanted to coldcock the guy. Years ago, a central banker killed my partner. Instead, I shook my head.“Let this be a message to all your central-banker friends out on the street,” I said. “No matter how many bitcoins you steal, you’ll never take away the dream of an open society based on the principles of personal and economic freedom.”He nodded, because he knew I was right. Then he swiped his credit card to pay me for arresting him.

@dave @Marshall1Banana im always thinking two thing when seeing this graph1. How do you know that 1C or 2C or even 3C is significant2. How is that, they are always able to avoid chaos in their equationsliterally you cant predict the weather further than 2 days, but you can predict climate

@xue @Marshall1Banana Not clear what you mean, are you asking if these temp anomalies are statistically significant (meaning, we know it’s not just random chance?), or are you asking how we know what the ramifications of these values are?Weather/climate trends in the short term are always going to be chaotic/noisy. You can’t predict future noise, but you can model the overall trend. This is why these graphs often include error margins to indicate the level of uncertainty, but you can probably see how it wouldn’t be practical to include them in this particular graph, given that you have four different projections being graphed on the same chart.

@xue @Marshall1Banana That’s like asking “why can’t anyone predict the next 2 dice rolls, but they can still tell you there’s a 1 in 6 chance of landing on each face”. Climate is ultimately governed by physics, which we do understand, so we can build a model for how it works. But the exact values at any point in time can’t be predicted, because it’s a chaotic system.“Chaotic” in this context has more to it than you probably realize. Ask ChatGPT to explain chaos math as it relates to weather, you may find it enlightening.

@dave @Marshall1Banana No, you dumb fuck, event space is not differential equation, do not use retarded comparisons like thatChaos means - super small difference in starting conditions (for example!, between measured value and real value, that is never possible to get) causes significant differences in results (exponential) over timeIts not about "exact" values, but about how your results goes down the shiter because of sole math and reality, professor used to say that it is "last prank from God"Now, its difficult to prove that system is chaotic but if you are gonna construct your whole narrative and political movement, you better have something to say about it.

@xue @Marshall1Banana Being unable to predict the exact state of the system at an exact point in time doesn’t mean we don’t understand how energy enters and leaves the system, and thus estimate how much energy will be in the system, and make projections on that basis. I do not know how I can make this any clearer to you.

@dave @Marshall1Banana Jesus,, thats the exact thing, we cant!thats why we cant predict weather further than 2,3 days aheadthats why my professor used that phrase - because despite the advancement we wont be able to do that ever, we know math, we know physics, we know measurement, pretty toughie for a man that thinks he can do anything its not rounding error, its not lack of theory, its not noise - its chaossome differential equations, for example those that describe movement of air, yield very different results based on small differences, very small, in fact "any" kind of difference in starting conditions over time

@xue @Marshall1Banana That first sentence is absolutely fucking retarded coming from a guy that at least pretends to understand the relevant math here. Makes me think you have plenty of crystal, but are kind of lacking in the fluid if you know what I mean. You seem to have somehow convinced yourself that we…predict global temperature trends based on the same models that we use to predict weather or something, and thus that we should be unable to predict the things like temperature trends far enough out, since we can’t predict the weather far enough out? Honestly, I’m not really sure what your logic is, but if you think that our inability to do long-term weather projections also means we should be unable to predict long-term global temperature trends, that is just straight up wrong.

at any rate, you missed the point. a memo was sent out, about which I can only speculate. the virologists I was watching suddenly started self-censoring. Dr. Malone and a few others went ahead and said what they thought, and were punished. -- that was about one of the gigantic 'current thing' propaganda/psyop campaigns. and this thread is about another (you started it @dave, remember?) -- Carl Sagan was pushing it in the '70s. Sabine got the memo about this campaign, and is contributing pseudoscientific bullshit to support it. And there are still a few of us who can tell the difference. the only reason I brought up molecular biology was because there is a real science discovery that ties the two topics together. I recommend it, but can't find my previous comment bc this thread is now 99.9% noise. -- Rancher out.

@blobfrog @Nudhul @dave @meowski > In case you are actually blind or wilfully ignorant about the topic at hand, this is an *assured* 'argument'I asked who, but it was a rhetorical question that I answered immediately. You clipped the quote and asked how I could possibly ask that question. If you had instead read the next four words, you would have understood the point instead of saying "HOW CAN YOU ASK THAT DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW ARE YOU SO BLIND AND WILLFULLY IGNORANT". God *damn*, if you're going to be an idiot, at least don't be an asshole about it.So the question and answer were "Who's making that goddamn argument? Nobody in this thread". I really don't care how many strawmen you care to muster: point it at the people making that case. I don't care to read it. As far as I can tell, nobody here is making that case. I certainly haven't, so leave me out of your rebuttals to an argument nobody made. It's a waste of time, and how you spend your time is your own call, but I don't care to read it.> If this is what you are reduced to arguing aboutMy point, as I said at the beginning of this branch of the thread, is that I do not care what people that are not present have to say if we are having a conversation; I asked to be left out of it because it was not relevant, which you ignored because you do not read nor think, and you instead persisted.

@p @blobfrog @meowski @Nudhul Oh yeah, can’t remember where in the thread it was, but you mentioned that newer CPUs consume more power, and this was in the context of the “switching to an ancient CPU” analogy since I was asserting that buying a truck is a waste if you basically never need to do truck stuff.Arguably, calling this ancient is a stretch given the slowdown of Moore’s law, but that only does a better job making the point. A 2600k does about 800 in single and 4000 in multi-threaded applications in Cinebench R23. The 13600k does 2000 single, 24000 multi. So 2.5x in single, and 6x in multi. I don’t have numbers offhand, but there’s no way it consumes that much more power. So total energy consumption for the same job will definitely be lower, in addition to being much more responsive of course.Maybe it was a misunderstanding, but you mentioned they consume more power now. That is true, but they get back to idle a lot quicker, so the energy consumed is lower.

It does happen, sure, but 90% of earthquakes are a mild shake, and of the remaining 10%, 90% of those are not fatal, and of the remaining 10% of those, the fatalities are from structures collapsing, catching fire, flooding, etc., rather than the earth opening up and swallowing people whole.

@dave @blobfrog @meowski @Nudhul > Arguably, calling this ancient is a stretch given the slowdown of Moore’s law, but that only does a better job making the point.Actually a worse job. An i7 versus an i5? Within ssh distance, I have, right now, a Phenom II X4 945 and a Pentium P6200, both doing useful work. I've also got this DevTerm, using an RK3399; even terrible $current_year browsers work fine on it.> CinebenchFigures on throughput are not useful; as I said, throughput is higher. Throughput is expected to be higher, or there'd be no reason to buy the new one. Throughput doesn't matter. What I *did* say was much higher power draw with worse responsive time (some of which is architectural). I also said that the excessive power draw is worth it when I need the throughput. (That is, the inefficiency of driving a truck everywhere is worth it to have the truck when you do need a truck.)I don't know why you are saying throughput is higher, but it is typical to conflate throughput and latency. Responsiveness is a latency problem, not a throughput problem *except* when you're at max throughput.> I don’t have numbers offhandEvery single chip (not just CPUs, but literally every chip manufactured, and every other component) has a datasheet, which says what every pin does, voltage ranges, temperature ranges for the operating environment, all of that. No one could design boards otherwise. Because no one could design power supplies without knowing the draw, you also get TDP.These are Intel's numbers. You don't even need the datasheets, TDP is important enough that it's in the summary page before downloading the datasheet:https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/27524/intel-pentium-iii-processor-s-1-26-ghz-512k-cache-133-mhz-fsb.htmlhttps://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/50176/intel-pentium-processor-p6200-3m-cache-2-13-ghz.htmlhttps://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/52214/intel-core-i72600k-processor-8m-cache-up-to-3-80-ghz.htmlhttps://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/230493/intel-core-i513600k-processor-24m-cache-up-to-5-10-ghz.html> but there’s no way it consumes that much more power.31.5% more power. (I remember when the headlines on the tech sites—we used to go to websites to read tech news—pointed out that the power density of desktop CPUs had surpassed the EZ-Bake Oven.)35W for the P6200 (which is a laptop CPU, so it'll be skewed towards much lower power usage), 95W for the 2600k, 125W for the 13600K (181W in "turbo" mode, but that's not the important figure), 30.4W the P3. For the RK3399, it's 7W. Maybe I should ditch the box with the PC6200 for another DevTerm! (Actually I have plans to replace it with a board using an RK3588 anyway; that's 12W, which is still 23W lower, but I think, as things stand, the big-ass monitor plugged into the computer actually uses more juice than the computer itself.)
