Stable Attribution is a service that can "attribute" sources for an image spawned by Stable Diffusion.https://www.stableattribution.comThis is interesting, as the attribution mechanism depends on the fact that the underlying dataset (LAION) and the model weights are all open source. Suggesting advantages to #opensource AI - of course proprietary models can also have such functionality, but the attribution mechanism will be a black box.#aicommons

@tarkowski This is fascinating, Alek, it has never been clear how the sources contribute to output. I have been chasing the ways to attribute generated images, the ToS from commercial firms seem to change weekly.

@cogdog I agree. Just the very fact that "Attribution" might mean something completely new; and that you can discover attribution in that haystack of billions of parameters. Though Mat Dryhurst, over on TT, has doubts whether this is really attribution, or just search for similar images across the LAION database (Which is publicly accessible). https://twitter.com/matdryhurst/status/1622416416996577280

@tarkowski That's my hunch too. Since we have no intuitive mental model understanding of what the black boxes are doing, I feel we are framing it on the familiar practice of sampling or copying bits of an original.I feel like its creating these over some crazy amount of iteration and variation compared statistically to training sources-- is this copying or something else?
