I mean, we tap each others' undersea comm cables with submarines, have fleets of satellites staring at other 24/7, have human assets infiltrating each other, and people are seriously considered about a friggin' balloon?

@lauren I'm guessing auto "correct" turned "concerned" into "considered"?

@lauren no kidding. Bit high - but still potential for signals though, so can't really discount it. On the face of it though, the chances a weather balloon is being used for weather seems pretty decent. Time will tell.

@mawhrin That was something genuinely new. So some concern was warranted.

@lauren What is the media not reporting on while they all point up at the sky and tell us what is obvious.?.

@lauren I have to wonder if part of the visceral fury is sort of lizard brain "they're marking my territory" / "they're violating my tender, innocent nation" kind of thing. Plenty of performative outrage there, sure, but also an emotional knee jerk reaction that defies rational analysis.

@three_star_dave Yes. Because the balloon was easy to see, while most surveillance is invisible.

@lauren I'm not sure if I'm comforted or worried by the obvious fact that the news media have nothing better to obsess about.

@lauren Inside the balloon is a SD card, presumptively holding the juicy secret intelligence they were gathering. But actually, it's a container-escape rootkit. The analyst gets owned. Lateral movement happens. Eventually, they get the intelligence they REALLY wanted... access to a big ol' forensic database. It's the world's highest profile "Found USB stick" gambit.
