       @mushroom_soup They're so afraid of breaking their core gameplay through upgrades, that they just avoid it entirely in place of number-crunching. I remember original Ninja Gaiden, which was an excellent beatemup with items, level-ups, and improved movesets that actually fucking mattered and felt like upgrades. I remember Morrowind, where even the more technical elements of the game's math made a huge difference as you continued on your journey.I remember Kotor, where it's nothing but turn-based combat and number-fagging, yet it still felt like you were becoming more powerful in-game.

       @Shadowbroker2135 @mushroom_soup My son played through Fenyx: Immortals Rising recently, and I quite liked the way they handled it in that game. You unlock new weapons/armour and visual variations in the normal manner, but can then choose to have any item display using any unlocked visual.
