It's the 4th presentation here at #fosdem which include this #xkcd drawing. I guess that people start to understand that the way #foss software are maintained is *bad*. So what do we do about it now?

@fla Note that the xkcd drawing does not specifically mention free software. (And rightly so: proprietary software is no better but you don't see it.)

@fla Quick draft proposition:We create software foundations all around the world, that will collect an obligatory percentage on each sold software in every country. That money would then be used to fund those projects.Loosely based on the work of Bernard #Friot on social security in France.

@dr4Ke @fla The big problem with all these proposals is how to do so without creating a huge bureaucracy, that will allocate funds based on its own criteria? Also, remember that many free software projects don't *want* money, beause of the strings attached (need to write reports, for instance).

@bortzmeyer @fla I agree. It's hard to do it right. Minimizing bureaucracy and maximizing democracy. There is always choices to make. For now, they are made through market rules. And they're not very efficient nor fair, IMO.As for the strings attached, I guess it would be simpler to just give money to people and they'd do what they want with their lives.

@bortzmeyer @fla it's even worse: it's not transparent, so you can't even know which software was sub-licensed and included in the product you bought, so you can possibly depend on a dozen of companies even for a single software, and you don't even know it.

@bortzmeyer @fla I recall one of the reasons given by Be, Inc. for not opensourcing BeOS was that they included stuff from other editors (Bitstream font engine, namely)…
