Predicted statement from U.S.: "We have recovered v̶i̶r̶t̶u̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶ a great deal of intelligence value from the downed Chinese evil spy s̶a̶t̶e̶l̶l̶i̶t̶e̶ balloon, but in the furtherance of national security we cannot detail how u̶s̶e̶l̶e̶s̶s̶ important this endeavor has been.

@lauren Good point. At this stage, the Official Narrative is going to be that it is a Chinese spy balloon and we will find out in fifty years when the documents are declassified what it actually was. We're slowly finding more details from Roswell, although I am a total skeptic there.

@lauren I am not sure whether it is official or not, but it sort of the standard for declassifying documents. Wait fifty years, then when no one really cares release the real data.

@lauren Has there been any reputable evidence that this thing was anything more than a weather balloon? And where are the mentions of the fact that this has occurred before without the faux panic.

@jeber Nothing I've seen beyond "Too big to be meteorological equipment" claims. I mean, yeah, it might have been a surveillance balloon. But the spooks have already admitted it couldn't have gotten anything of real value beyond what the satellites already get, and why send secret equipment over when it would be so easy to spot and bring down?

@mkarliner @amerika Because if that were the case the Chinese would have immediately said so. Also, payload really way too big for that.

@lauren The Chinese act like we shot down a passenger plane with 250 people aboard. So the balloons were useful from an intelligence value standpoint...

@amerika @lauren understandable doubt considering the lack of transparency from state officials 🤷‍♂️.A quote from the article below."We weren’t supposed to notice the floating intruder. According to Bloomberg, the federal government was already aware of the balloon, and had been for several days, but they wished to keep the matter on the “down-low” so as not to disrupt a coming meeting between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and high Chinese officials. "https://www.thefp.com/p/the-chinese-spy-balloon-over-my-house?

@lauren we have this saying in Spanish (loses some in translation): this is like a rabbit telling another rabbit that it has big ears. They do it. We do it. Everybody does it. The Chinese excuse was rather weak, tho.

@lauren @mkarliner One other relevant question: was it even intended to leave China?Seems more like a local project. They may be quiet about it because their industry is intently focused on weather manipulation.

@amerika @mkarliner Probably was intended to travel widely irrespective of its planned purpose. A missing factor right now is those claims we were hearing yesterday of a second balloon, over Latin/South America, which the Pentagon even seemed to be parroting. I've been skeptical that the second one actually existed and I haven't been hearing about it lately.

@lauren1. We don't know for certain if it was a spy plane or not.2. We don't have any reliable sources to contest the narrative of what's been recovered.3. It's certainly possible that a balloon can capture more details as outlined here: https://www.yahoo.com/now/chinese-spy-balloon-over-us-143810616.html

@lauren @mkarliner It's good to be skeptical here. Initial reports are usually wrong, sometimes absurdly so.Sort of like all the people who wanted to shoot a balloon at 60k feet with a shotgun. It'd have to be a big shotgun.

@amerika @mkarliner Trump, Jr. appeared to be suggesting that ordinary folks in Montana could just shoot it down themselves -- at over 60,000 feet. Which confirms what we already know about Trump, Jr.

@TylerJWhit It can but it's not obvious if those additional details are worth the effort of having something so obvious and easy to take down floating around.

@lauren that doesn't indicate any factual information, just speculation. What we do know is that 3 previous balloons entered into US airspace under the Trump administration unheeded. Those times could have given China the confidence to be brazen, but again, all of that is speculation.
