Talk me out of writing a frontend that is just JSON with full JavaScript templating.I used to be very anti websites that were JS only, but even Tor supports JavaScript now.

@josh What do you think the main arguments against it would be, in your opinion? I can't think of any.

@memefrog JavaScript is for fags and it's traditionally soydev to require JS for core functionality.

@josh browser exploits is the only reason i would think not to do so. alot of attacks on tor abuses javascript and turning it off would stop alot of said attacks. then again your threat model is what determines weather you use js or not.

@twl A lot time ago, Tor did not enable JavaScript by default.

@josh seems kinda dumb to enable by default, doesn't JS still have exploits that can get your real IP unless your using tails?

@josh You already know why. JScript breaks in a hundred different ways, is a massive pain to debug, will break with any of a hundred browser extensions or blockers, introduces vulnerabilities you won't hear about for years, and is the source of web faggotry for 20+ years running. It also requires you to sacrifice your soul and become a soy filled husk of a man.

@twl @josh Yeah, I believe the decision was made to bring in more users since many sites don't work without js, and retards would sooner switch back to chr*me than figure out how to turn off noscript

@josh Tor has supported JavaScript for as long as it's existed. Is it secure? No. Case in point: https://tails.boum.org/security/prototype_pollution/index.en.html (JavaScript was enabled by default in Tor at the time of publishing)Poor performance and lacking accessibility also come to mind. Besides that, JavaScript mandatory frontends are a disgrace to the very paradigm of the web. You have a server running your website, so you should serve users a web page, no?Instead, you serve a multi-megabyte PROGRAM and further cement browsers as the new de-facto cross-platform app library.Use JavaScript by all means to enhance the frontend, but any site that shows nothing but a blank page or "please enable javascript" when you have JavaScript disabled is just an embarassing joke.I urge you to take this seriously.

@josh In general, Javascript often kills accessibility, especially for things like screen readers. I think there are some frameworks/libraries that try to address this, but in the past, they haven't been great.

@josh frameworks like Next support server-side rendering, so SEO shouldn’t be the problem. You can even serve a bunch of pre-rendered pages and hydrate them with new data on client-side.
