Gravity is not 9.8 ms^2. That's just the global average. On this globe it is stronger in the red areas and weaker in the blue areas

@shaman funny, Gravity follows the mountains, as it is in direct relationship with the distance to the Earth's core.

@shaman I would have guessed the opposite, that one would weigh least at the mountaintops near the equator and most at sea level at the poles.

@shaman I love this, but I have to admit, I'm a little confused. Shouldn't the areas in red, which appear to be at higher elevations, have a weaker gravitational field than areas closer to earth's center? Also the poles should automatically have slightly stronger gravity since the earth's radius is shorter by about 20 km compared to the equator. I'm going off the formula g=GMe/R^2.I'm not trying to troll, but I did have questions.

So what’s the upper bound and the lower bound of the downward acceleration due to gravity? This globe doesn’t really tell me that, just that it varies.

@shaman I'm sure my physics teacher told me this, but then we spent so much time using the approximations (9.8 m/s^2, gravity calculated based on distance to a point mass at the center of the earth, etc.) that I forget that these are just approximations.

@shaman And on a slightly different note, did y'all read how they measured this map?! Two satellites in orbit around earth, when one passes over an area of greater than usual gravity (from like 1000 miles away) it speeds up slightly. The observed change between the two satellites measures the change in gravity, but that's a change of less than 1/10 of the width of a human hair! The change in position is measured with microwave beams between the two satellites. Crazy!
