⚠️ Warning to anyone on the mstdn.party or mstdn.plus servers, recommend you move to another server ASAP. @feditips I hope their admin is OK. Mastodon.world has 3 admins and 7 moderators. So no single point of failure. People are welcome to migrate here if they want.

@feditips Could you please link https://instances.social in the future instead/with https://joinmastodon.org/servers ? There are not that much of servers in https://joinmastodon.org/servers and therefore I think it is not well maintained. I think many instance owners asked to be on this server list and they are not getting on it. For example this happened to my instance too. On https://instances.social there are way more instances and every server owner can add their instance easily. Best Regards.

@dominik @feditips the whole point of the joinmastodon.org list is that there is a covenant, which specifies minimum standards that are supposed to avoid situations like this. Letting any old server on the list is the exact opposite of that.Unfortunately, it might have failed in this case (I think mstdn.party was on it).

@john The problem I have with the server list on joinmastodon.org, that it can be hard to get their. Everything is linked to this site, where so many mastodon server aren't there. So where are new people going? Mostly on the only servers that are listed there or the servers where friends are, which also got the server from this server list. For example we are trying since 2 1/2 months and there isn't even a receive confirmation what we got. Literally nothing.

I know instances that have been running despite the admins having been dead for over a year. Scary times, people.If I ever stop posting on the Fedi, assume I’m 6 feet - or more - under.

Not at all, you just seriously never know what’s gonna happen. I don’t think I’m gonna die, but seriously, my instance entirely depends on my electricity bill, if I’m dead there’ll be no one doing this.I just want people to know the risk of joining a single-admin instance.

@stux @feditips The instance where I had my main account (mstdn.ai) literally did just that. I came home from work on Thursday to find it was gone, with a note apologizing for the short notice. Fortunately I hadn't shut this account down when I set up that one!

I can’t predict what people use my instance for. I used to have someone from France on here who’d publish self written poems daily @litadieuze, I think was it. My Fediverse instance went down during the holidays because I was unavailable and it was overused for the Pi-Cluster it used to run on, so then it went offline for over a month.That person hasn’t posted since, I think after my instance went offline they just assumed all their content would be lost.I don’t want for people to have to backup all their content by themselves, I want them to be able to trust me and the Fediverse (through backups as well as downtime being kept to a minimum).Just making a new account to some might mean losing a lot of important thoughts and memories. You may not like it, but this is how normies use social media platforms.

@stux @feditips is this an inherent boo-boo that has no remedy? If Mastodon gets much bigger, isn't this likely to become a recurring problem? Is there a way to automatically mass-transfer accounts to a "safe harbor" if an instance is failing for whatever reason?
