Judge uses ChatGPT to speed up ruling over whether an autistic minor is on the hook for therapy fees.I'll be honest, as a kid I didn't predict Douglas Adams' Infinite Improbability Drive to be the closest model of the future's tolerance for chaos technologies.https://www.vice.com/en/article/k7bdmv/judge-used-chatgpt-to-make-court-decision

⬆️ this is my third toot to receive a bunch of boosts and ⭐s, and I've got to say, the experience is still more pleasant here than on the bird site. Way less vitriol and unexpected 🤨-inducing replies.

@scott_bot Same experience. I’m not sure yet how much is inherent to the design of the platform and how much is self-selection among users. I.e., if this was the only game in town, would the fraction of aggressive replies go up much?

@TedUnderwood I suspect if it were the only game in town, toxicity would increase, but I also think the platform plays a part. The culture of defederation, for one, as well as the fact that virality isn't reinforced either by The Algorithm's positive feedback loop or the aesthetic of engagement (no indicator in the main feed of whether you're seeing a viral toot with lots of replies). As a network scientist, I deeply appreciate the idea that models of toot propagation may be explainable by only four factors: follower count, toot interestingness, time posted, and the ability to boost. No pesky double-, triple-, etc. feedback loops. Even Quintessence adds enough friction to likely offer no more than a rounding error.

@scott_bot Agreed. And while I like algorithmic discovery, part of the civility too is that the default context for most interactions here is “two ppl who have voluntarily connected” — not “drive-by comment,” even though the latter does happen.

@TedUnderwood @scott_bot yeah precisely. It’s, dare I say it, more like the IRL social dynamics we evolved to successfully navigate?
