And of course after they shoot down the balloon they'll be so embarrassed by the nothing burger they find that they'll either claim it was of "immense intelligence value" (but of course refuse to provide any details), or will just say, "CLASSIFIED" and nothing more. Because, you know, otherwise they all look like morons.

@lauren May be a stupid question - but HAS ANYONE ASCERTAINED what is IN the balloon?

@lauren Incredibly stupid story. Absolutely eye-roll inducing US media coverage.

@lauren Not sure why they didn't spot it and shoot it down over the Pacific instead of waiting until after it completed its mission. What DHS doing?

@gulovsen Because it's a nothing burger. They KNOW it's nothing of value. They're only putting on this big show for political reasons.

@lauren Oh no doubt. But letting a spy balloon fly over the entire continental US is dumb. I like the Biden administration. But they f*cked this one up. Doesn't matter if it's a nothingburger IMO. That's not supposed to happen.

@lauren I don’t think it’s unreasonable to shoot down another country’s surveillance balloon in your own airspace. I don’t think it’s a huge threat, though.

@gulovsen They don't even really know that's it's spying. The U.S. pulls the same kinds of stunts all the time over other countries.

@michaelgemar The U.S. pulls the same class of stunts over other countries all the time. And in fact, we'll probably never know for sure what the balloon actually was, because we'll never be told the truth about it, especially if it wasn't a surveillance balloon.

@lauren Of course the US does this in other countries. That doesn’t mean that, at a practical diplomatic level, it doesn’t want to discourage other countries from doing this to the US.

@michaelgemar I've watched the intelligence apparatus of the U.S. for a very, very long time. This is all nonsense, and they know it. It's all political posturing now.

@lauren 🤷🏻‍♀️ Why are you so sure that nothing will be found? It seems you have not such a good idea about the Chinese intentions with the western world. It sounds a little the same like the people trying to convince me a year ago that Russia would not attack Ukraine 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had a complete different opinion about the Russian intentions, and it showed I was right 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway as I know the Chinese, I will be very surprised when it is just a weather balloon.

@musictraveler I didn't say "just a weather balloon." I said it was likely nothing of importance given the scope of Spy vs. Spy activities all the powers engage in all the time. But we'll never know.

@lauren Yes, you are correct, we both didn’t say “just a weather balloon”. And yes, we have indeed a different opinion because I personally think that it was a spy balloon with something of importance. And you are right and I know also that most nations are spying but with the Chinese it’s different. Let’s say it in this way, when the Chinese will once see their window of opportunity to start… the Russians will look like little children 🤷🏻‍♀️

@musictraveler They already control our economy -- we gave that to them eyes wide open. Practically everything in the room I'm sitting in was manufactured in China, including the screens I'm reading now, the keyboard I'm typing on, the glass in the windows. Xi isn't an idiot. In fact, he wanted that meeting that was cancelled, and wouldn't purposely risk it now. But in any case, the U.S. government (like all governments) would never tell the truth in a situation like this, just as Eisenhower lied about U2 flights over Russia -- until Powers showed up in Moscow.

@lauren I know, it’s indeed silly to see how easy the Chinese succeeded with their infiltration. It’s all part of their big plan, only a pity we followed their plan with our eyes close just due to our greed. Anyway it’s always good to admit your mistakes and to take action like we are doing now by reducing our dependence from China. And yes Xi isn’t an idiot but he is far more dangerous than Putin 🤷🏻‍♀️ The West should build its army with priority one before it’s to late

@lauren And yes, you are right that governments will not admit about their spying. That is why China calls it a weather balloon and why Eisenhower was so smart to call the U2 plane a weather research aircraft in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s very logic because at that moment they knew one plane was missing but they didn’t know the status of the pilots. When China showed Powers and parts of the plane the US admitted 🤷🏻‍♀️ very logic. Russia/China will not even admit with proof 🤦🏻‍♀️
