If you still have a #twitter account, it's probably worth joining the #CommunityNotes program to try and at least slightly slow the #disinformation machine.https://twitter.github.io/communitynotes/examples/ You have to rate a lot of things before it lets you write your own, but that might be a good thing.Rating is much lower effort than writing, so you can do a little bit of it when you're too tired or too distracted to do anything more useful.

@john If you've got a better idea of how to slow down the disinformation machine I'll switch to that?Currently - we have millions of people dying of COVID, some of whom might have survived if they weren't dangerously misinformed- Modi's India looks disconcertingly like Germany circa 1938 - and #Tuvalu🇹🇻 is on the brink of not existing anymoreIf I can even slightly slow any of those disasters, I will very willingly do it for free.

@johnLeaving #twitter MIGHT help, but it's ambiguous and I'm not convinced it is the most effective option.Leaving just leaves a higher concentration of worse options on a platform that still has much bigger reach than the fringe things like #Rumble and #BitChuteOn a related note, anyone making good content (that they're allowed to share) should consider reposting in on those platforms, to try to get through to the nearly completely lost.

@kirt But your argument suggest we should have accounts on Truth Social, Gab, and Parlor too surely?Or Facebook, even, which is far larger than Twitter.

@kirt Twitter’s social relevance needs to be broken, because it is entirely controlled by a capricious megalomaniac who can and will change the rules at any time to suit his agenda. Continuing to work for it for nothing gives a veneer of respectability it does not deserve.

@john @kirt@mastodon.social i said better ideas, not worse ones?but if you can think of something useful to do on those, and you have the time, then possibly yes.I suggested the video platforms because if someone already has an educational channel on YouTube they could have a big impact for fairly minimal effort by reposting the same content (or marking just minor quick edits, e.g. removing patreon credits outro)

@john @kirt@mastodon.social but i don't think breaking the social relevance actually stops the firehose of falsehood? it just makes it more insular.and even if all the less dangerous people leave, it will still be bigger than any of the minor networks like parlor etc.moderating twitter is not a particularly high impact use of one's time, but rating a few community notes is something that can be done one handed on a phone in a few minutes here and there when there is nothing more useful to do.

@john @kirt@mastodon.social facebook lets you report posts, but it works very differently. Facebook's reporting system is a deliberate black box, but i suspect reporting more posts gives each report less impact? if you have a few minutes to kill then seeking out facebook posts to report is probably a lot less useful than twitter community notes.if there is a better way to fight dangerous misinformation then i want to know so i can do that? especially if i can do that with one thumb while half asleep?

@kirt@newsie.social @kirt@mastodon.social I guess my overall point that you're never going to stop people being wrong on the internet. But you can avoid giving your labour and legitimacy to bad-faith platforms like Elon's Twitter. People should not be taking Twitter seriously as a source of information.

@john @kirt@newsie.social i also can't stop trying, and of all the ways to attempt it this seems to be one of the most productive. and "people being wrong in the Internet" is a unrealistically trivializing. This isn't just whether Lulu is the best Metallica album. The kind of disinformation spewing from the darker corners of twitter could kill people, a lot of them, imminently.now I'm wondering which has killed more people out of Twitter and Facebook…https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-bangladesh-myanmar-united-nations-f7d89e38c54f7bae464762fa23bd96b2

@kirt@mastodon.social @kirt@newsie.social it’s not trivial, but bad faith platforms are a terrible place to fight it. I’m guessing you wouldn’t bother on 4chan or Truth Social.

@kirt@mastodon.social @kirt@newsie.social Locking my account, and not posting anything of value there apart from reminders to leave because they're in Musk's dystopian panopticon. And in real life, looking vaguely disgusted if someone says they're on Twitter ;-).The big social media companies need to die, or this will keep repeating.

@john @kirt@newsie.social if truth social was as big as twitter (or even just offering a similar system) I'd try.and again, what's your alternative?i fully acknowledge this is a fairly low yield tactic, but for a better one I'm completely stumped?and it's likely to take time i would otherwise spend just doomscrolling and swearing at US Americans in colourful Aussie slang, i probably should have spent the past couple of hours on it instead of debating someone who's wrong on the Internet on mastodon 😝

@john @kirt@mastodon.social as someone looking at a mastodon notification from January… there are definitely less constructive things i could be doing?also, this conversation made me want to try and talk an assortment of my favourite science communicators into starting rumble channels…this might be like the time this concept made me quite scared of bananas? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_equivalent_dose

@john i was pleased to see at least one person on the right side of reality already has a #Rumble channelit just duplicates all her vids from YouTube, but that's a good idea, very minimal extra time and effort to get more accurate information to the people currently seeing it least.https://rumble.com/v27usyb-is-this-the-worst-antivaxxer-paper-ever.html@kirt@mastodon.social @kirt@newsie.social
