       Do not agree to rent what you have purchased. I bought an HP printer (and did not enable toner rental!) a few years back, because I was so sick of my Brother laser printer crashing all the time and obnoxious consumables problems and it not working well with open source drivers. But HP isn't the same HP that it once was. ☹https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/02/home-printer-digital-rights-management-hp-instant-ink-subscription/672913/

       Note, relatedly, that given that Tesla doesn't have an OEM parts supply and gets to set the prices and availability for replacement parts and repair manuals, "buying" a Tesla is renting your car up front for the duration of the warranty; after that all bets are off.I do not understand how any competent technologically-savvy purchaser buys a Tesla. I see that it happens, and I attribute it to compartmentalizing understanding, but it still makes no intuitive sense to me.

       @mcdanlj Same reason people buy two-year-old tech for a 60% markup with Apple products: for the status conveyed by the brand and the presumption of righteousness according to the current political philosophy (egalitarianism).I wouldn't buy one either but his solar panels look great.

       @mcdanlj In my view, Tesla was just his booster business so he could fund the stuff he was really interested in.They're like those M-60 "zippo" tanks, light every time.

       @mcdanlj That's one way around right-to-repair.

       @mcdanlj precisely why I purchased a Canon when my old HP printer finally had enough. HP attracts buyers with really cheap printer prices, it's a smart model for profit but not something I could ever buy into.
