One thing I'll say for the wave of Republican book-banning that's going on right now -- it's certainly making books seem powerful and *significant*Book-banning is a terrible way to have the public re-realize the catalytic effect a good book can have on its readersBut here we are: https://boingboing.net/2023/01/31/unable-to-burn-digital-books-orange-unified-school-district-bans-the-whole-virtual-library.html

@clive I've read quite a few books that are on banned book lists... know why I read them (in grade school, high school, and in college)? Because they were banned. I might have never discovered them had they not provided me with a handy list of books that they didn't want me to read.

@clive Books mold minds at any age. Restrictions on books impact parent's exposure to new ideas too.Read a book like "Feed" by MT Anderson and a parent will see social media in a new light. The Republican billionaire donors don't want citizens, voters, or an informed public. These donors want consumers, baby-makers, homeless, zealots, serfs, unemployed, poor, disenfranchised, and fascists.https://slate.com/technology/2022/11/z-library-pirated-books-papers-school-tor.htmlhttps://www.wired.com/story/m-t-anderson-feed-20-years-later/

@clive These fascist Republicans are threatened by books. How can they possibly control us with all these books asking questions, opening us up to nature, learning past and possible futures? Turns out books are dangerous. It’s safer to let the people have guns.

@clive @aral Dear right-wing fascists: you can ban books all day but it doesn’t undo the truth of a pluralistic society filled with many people whose mere existence seems to threaten you, scare you or demonstrate how fragile your own belief system is, and how pathetic your attempt is to hold power. The kids will find the books they need. Fuck off.

@clive I wish I were so optimistic. The EuGH ruled in 2021 that an ebook is a communication, not a sale, so you are not allowed to pass it on, because that right is reserved for the author. So if the author retracts an ebook (due to pressure?), that ebook becomes unavailable in the EU — you are not even allowed to pass on your exact version while deleting what you have locally.Decision of EuGH: https://curia.europa.eu/juris/document/document.jsf?docid=221829&mode=req&pageIndex=1&dir=&occ=first&part=1&text=C%25E2%2580%2591263%252F18&doclang=DE&cid=4222787#ctx1That’s some dystopian shit.

@clive @mmasnickGeorge Orwell’s 1984 conveys the extreme level of control and power possible under a truly totalitarian regime. Margaret Atwood’s, Handmaid’s Tale, banned many times, explores themes of subjugated women in a patriarchal society and the loss of female agency and individuality. These books warn us of the dangers we face when a government dictates and controls what we read, what we say and who we are. It is happening in real time . . .#BookBanning #MargaretAtwood #GeorgeOrwell

@clive the whole concept of banning books makes no sense to me! It’s short of admitting you hate a particular aspect of one’s story, or very rarely that sinister ideas are allowed to flourish so broadly.
