The #Canadian Department of Defense said it was tracking a potentially second reconnaissance balloon entering the space of the #American continent.

You need to understand that such balloons are extremely difficult to shoot down. For example, in 1998, a #Canadian weather balloon began drifting into #Russian airspace. Fighters from #Canada, #Norway and #Sweden tried unsuccessfully to bring it down. Two #Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet fighters fired more than 1,000 shots from a 20mm cannon off the coast of Newfoundland, punching holes in it, but not enough to release a significant amount of gas, and the balloon continued to drift. 1/2

A volley of rockets did not help either, since high-explosive fragmentation shells simply flew through the ball without detonating.2/2

@RouxJ A little-known fact about multi-million dollar fighter aircraft is that they are very bad at dealing with dirigibles. An aluminum skin would probably overwhelm the jet's radar, and the low velocity would make tracking very difficult.
