@brewsterkahle The plural of pie is pies, but when saying “I’m eating pie”, we use the mass noun syntax to refer to an unquantifiable amount of pie. Which is fascinating. I wonder why we do that. #Linguistics https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_noun

@jkxyz I love that-- "mass nouns",but that wikipedia entry lost me when it described mass nouns in mathematical formula-- also kind of cool, in a scary way.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_noun

@brewsterkahle Very close. Plural of "pie" is "pieces". E.g. "I used to have a single pie, but now I have many pieces."

@brewsterkahle Oh god, that formula is just the most complex way possible to explain the sentence “it can mean any amount of a thing.”

@brewsterkahle if it's two pies, you could say "I'm eating tau"
