I'm sure we have anti air now capable of going that high from the ground if not we do when its fired from an aircraft. Even if we used our "super duper anti-satellite" missile, it wouldn't give much away. This target is a lot larger, the altitude is roughly 1/20 of a satellites even at 100k feet, and its so slow compared to one its practically stationary. Why they haven't shot it down is beyond me.

Easier with a fighter unless the ballon happens to fly over a SAM site, which are probably actually somewhat sparse inside CONUS.Usually an air to air missile is fired from a moving jet, at another moving target. So the speed and maneuverability of both matter. Missiles also bleed a lot of energy at low altitude due to denser air.Most fighter jets can officially fly something like 60,000 ft, but I’m quite certain they can get up to 80,000 if not 100,000 with full afterburner and a light weapons load.Which is all to say no, we wouldn’t need to use an anti-satellite missile.
