I mentioned this in another thread but it bears repeating:The market for hiring developers is insane right now. We've had 3,500 applicants for a role that normally gets 400-500 max.Processing that many CVs is hard and we have 30sec max to make an initial decision to disqualify or look deeper.Keep your CV punchy and short, and check that it is ATS-friendly. If we ingest the wrong data you could lose out. A great cover letter makes a huge difference, especially right now.

@s Do you know of a way to test for ATS-friendliness? Or any resources on how to make my CV ATS-friendly?

@89netram An internet search for "ATS resume checker" comes up with a bunch of things, but I haven't tried them out. They all want you to sign up first. 🙄 An ATS ingests your PDF and tries to extract your work experience into a small table so that I can read it succinctly. (Same with LinkedIn profiles, skills, etc.)The worst mistake you can make is not using reverse-chronological format. But a really beautiful, fancy PDF will unfortunately be harder for the software to parse.

@89netram np. Also, on my point about cover letters: People argue that recruiters don't care as much about them these days. However, if you are applying directly to a role (which is the only way we hire), a cover letter makes a huge difference as it's the hiring manager who will see it. It should cover:- These are my skills- These are why I think my skills are relevant to your job ad specifically- This is why I am enthusiastic about your company in particularwith 1 paragraph for each.

It's really hard letting down so many people. I've had some heart wrenching responses. I also can't respond individually to requests for feedback, which I usually try to do. It's sad.

@kaputse No, neither. I think it's a combination of factors:- Layoffs at Meta, Amazon, Twitter & other large companies- The breakdown of the blockchain ecosystem and a lot of startups failing as a result- Our company getting more well-known and having a higher profileWe're remote first and hire from EU, UK, USA and Canada so the catchment area is pretty large. But we're competing with London salaries, not bay area.

@sThanks for the insights! I have been hiring software engineering positions for ~7 years in western Germany. Always granting competitive salary but the numbers never came near yours.Admittedly, most of the jobs require on-site availability. I am curious if remote first is the major factor here. What's your hiring rate? 10-20 out of 3500? Must be devastating.

@kaputse We're looking for 5 people or thereabouts. As I say, ~500 is normal. The "we'll filter out your CV in 30 seconds" issue is real. Hence why I think a cover letter, when you're applying directly to the hiring manager, is super important. I'm sure we've missed some great people.Salary expectations are nuts as well right now. 6 months ago there were few devs about, and now there are loads. People with 2 years of experience want £60k and the market just doesn't support that now.

@s> Salary expectations are nuts as well right now. [..] People with 2 years of experience want £60k and the market just doesn't support that now.I can relate, same here.Anyways, I really like what you are doing at Overleaf. Back in the days we worked on sth similar for a research project at the University of Paderborn. LaTeX editing, Mendeley style reference manager and machine learning powered plagiarism detection. Good times 🚀

@kaputse Thanks! It's a great bunch of people and we have a blast. I've been there for 4.5 years now and joining the company was one of the better decisions that past Simon has been responsible for. :thinka:
