Sometimes when I’m feeling unwell & can’t do much I revisit some true crime cases.(I’ve mentioned before I job shadowed 2 detectives & was a weird kid who was into forensic entomology.) And my associate’s was in psychology so I’m fascinated with how “wrong” the human brain can go. I think it helps me as a writer as well, trying to understand the dark side of human nature.Sometimes, though, it gives me the creeps. I’m on a Jodi Arias kick (the trial was wild) & she’s creep-ball city.

@SaraNSmit She's another animal, indeed! I studied serial killers in university. Absolutely understand deviance, though "looking into the abyss" constantly would have broken me eventually, so I chose another path. I did a paper on Columbine - was very into that case for a while.

And of course, there is a myriad of American serial k*llers who gave me the creeps since childhood. In case you’re wondering what gives, I had a young grandmother who told me *way too much* about true crime at a young age. I think she just didn’t want me to talk to strangers & all she succeeded in doing was insuring the life of an anxious introvert who spoke to no one.#myfamilyiskindacrazy #truecrime

@JeffEmmerson I agree; I definitely give props to the detectives and professionals who handle that stuff on a daily basis, but deep down I know I would not be able to do that 8-12 hours a day (or longer, I’m sure). In a way I’ve carried the knowledge that people can be really creepy my whole life, & to my Granny’s credit, I did avoid people who’d hurt me.But as an adult, the knowledge that people can be duplicitous is heavy.

@SaraNSmit Surreal in a way, right? Hard to fathom.

@SaraNSmit ...and most often I suspect it isn't simply "nature vs. nurture, but a definite combination. Nothing is usually a simple explanation (though now and then that happens, I'm sure).

@JeffEmmerson an afterthought here: what’s even more sobering is the realization that a person doesn’t have to be violent in order to be dangerous or sociopathic. I have, unfortunately, encountered people who appeared totally normal, like they cared about me, etc, only to find out that was the farthest thing from the truth.Me: (yells into the void) WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE ICKYlol

@SaraNSmit and to that I respond with the thought that we're all damaged in our own ways. Trauma, DNA or whatever else...Dr. Robert Hare was an expert in the "Snakes in Suits" realm. A fellow Canadian who I suspect you already know of. 'Wrote some powerful books and is incredibly insightful in psychopathy/sociopaths.

@SaraNSmit Also: check out the YouTube channel of "Scott on Tape" - he visits crime scenes and locations like Jodi's, Ed Gein and many others. Yet another cool Canadian. 😁
