Ron DeSantis isn't the only one who wants to erase Black history. This is something America has been trying to do since the beginning. If anything, DeSantis is emblematic of a much larger problem, one that’s not only centered around race but one that concerns the freedoms and civil liberties inherent to any given democracy. Recent history has already shown us what effect the banning of books and denial of human experiences has on a society, and we are steadily headed in that direction. This is all right out of the ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) playbook. If you don't know about ALEC, who funds them, and what their agenda is, you should. Dismantling public schools and higher education institutions is high on their priorities list. Getting the population who should be allied to split apart is key to maintaining their power.Without education, there can be no understanding. That’s part of their goal.Opinion DeSantis is wrong about Black studies-https://wapo.st/3Yg81CA

@TonyStark People don’t realize that the holocaust didn’t happen overnight. Erasing a people, their culture and their identity is a crime. It’s called #EthnicCleansing. This is precisely what ALEC and their ilk are trying to do to United States history. This is not okay, this is the road down to #authoritarianism and a racist society. This makes my stomach churn.

@Porpentina2017 Wow, I had completely forgotten about ALEC, thanks for the reminder. Keeping up with Conservatives and their demented selfish organizations is hard work. More Citizens United Corporates control of government. "Through the corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, global corporations and state politicians vote behind closed doors to try to rewrite state laws that govern your rights." @Piousunyn @Porpentina2017 excellent resource, thanks. I knew about the #Kochtopus as I had read a bit about them. The Koch Brothers’s father Fred was a founding member of the John Birch Society, far-right group I had the misfortune to meet some members. Liken JBS to JW, extremely persistent, far-out. Keep far away from.https://www.democracynow.org/2012/12/18/video_kochtopus_map_of_the_billionaire_koch_brothers_influence

@TonyStark Everyone (especially white "liberals", "progressives", and anarchists) who tells anyone to move from a state because of oppressive governance really needs to educate themselves on ALEC, and the entirety of U.S. and colonial history.

@ricardoharvin I have had many discussions with people about that one.Just telling people to move out of an area or asking why they live there to begin with is really not helpful. Not many people and particularly the ones already under oppression can afford to pick up and move easily.

@TonyStark @ricardoharvin My sister actually told me that at one point - we were trying to get out of an area for a variety of reasons and her answer was to “just” pick up and move to the area we wanted and find jobs when we got there….um….no. pack up and move our family of young kids on the hope that it would all work out???If I couldn’t do it, with the layers of privilege I was born into, it’s absurd to imagine that anyone could.

@CrazyBusyCreative @TonyStark @ricardoharvin TBH, I wish more progressive Americans would move *to* red states. Most of them have tiny populations. There are more of us than there are of them, we could flip them and get some more senators on our side.(I know, I know, but I can dream, can't I?)

@daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative @TonyStark In most states the issue isn't population, but gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the disinterested and disengaged mass of potential voters who've been convinced they don't matter and that all politics and politicians are the same because too few supposed liberals, elected and voters, fight hard and relentlessly for fundamental positive changes the way conservatives long have fought for oppression.

@ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative So much white nonsense that people can pick up and move out of rights smashing states or that others should move into rights smashing states that it needs its own hashtag. #WhiteNonsenseRight up there with just get your books in the library or your kids some school online.

@Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative And even if they did move -There’s no guarantee that things won’t get worse wherever they move too and if all the Dems left red states for blue states, Congress would be permanently controlled by the GOP and we’d never win a presidential election again. It’s just dumb all over.

@samhainnight This is really important. I’ve posted before that there are no states in this country that haven’t had a Republican governor in my lifetime (and I’m Gen X, not the 115-year old current oldest person). Only two that haven’t had one this century. So there’s not a lot of political purity to go around. We all have neighbors who voted them in, even if we personally didn’t and our states are currently under Democratic control. *Maybe• I could sell to a right wing nut since I’m on the east coast and live very near other states if mine became the next Florida. But I have reasons I am where I am so if I were in this exact situation in another state, it would be impossible. I don’t expect it to be any easier for others. @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative

@MariaHill Absolutely this Maria - wonderfully said.White-Flight and other "greener pastures" solutions don't work - they just displace the problem to a later time or move it into a potential worse situation.I could fully operate my entire life in a mobile vehicle. That doesn't mean that due to my situation I should be required to. The concept of segregating groups doesn't help - they barely recognize us as humans now with temporary access to luxuries like food, shelter, medical supplies. If they move to Elysium while we stay down here - will they still?@samhainnight @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative

@mentallyalex Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania are purple and just elected some Democrats though they aren't fully blue. (Massachusetts and Maryland were already pretty blue and bought into Republican governors' promises about transportation and taxes but decided they didn't need the next iteration of Republicans after all and now have Democratic trifectas.) What if people gave up on those purple states and moved out, or Michigan and Minnesota with their new Democratic trifectas? We could have had five fully Republican states instead of three states with a decent amount of Democratic control and/or representation and two fully under Democratic control. That would be an electoral college nightmare for 2024.Wisconsin can also get its Supreme Court back to Democratic in April, which could also undo gerrymandering and voter suppression there.@samhainnight @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative

@MariaHill This is a great point. I live in a section of PA that votes overwhelmingly red like clockwork (we can't even get rid of Scott Perry) BUT we did dramatically shift our state-wide and national red/blue ratio between 2016 and 2020 (Biden lost by ~10 points, Clinton by ~17). Might not seem like much, but get enough Red counties voting less Red, and you can see shifts in the larger elections once the Blue counties get added to the totals. Family keeps us here for the next few years at least, despite means and remote-capable jobs, so we'll do what we can while we're here.@mentallyalex @samhainnight @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative

@kailagenevieve @MariaHill @mentallyalex @samhainnight @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative Every time I look at US election numbers, I don't see "get people to vote less red". Instead I see "if Democrats actually got off their arses and voted, there are enough of them to swallow up the Republicans in nearly every district/riding/whatever in the USA, even if all the Republicans vote."Republicans win with a combination of gerrymandering and lazy Democrat voters.Every time a registered voter says "Gah, I'm not voting. My vote doesn't make a difference", Mitch McConnell and MTG eat Cajun Kitten Gumbo.

@hapalochlaena @MariaHill @mentallyalex @samhainnight @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative I think its a little more nuanced than that where I live. Rs have a very good registration advantage in my area even though PA is a lot closer to 50-50 overall. It's a red county - through and through - with a lot of "small government, big military" feeling. Part of the reason 2020 swung the way it did here was that Rs didn't have enthusiasm and Trump lost enough of them with his behavior/lack of ethics that they voted D or stayed home. I know plenty of the former. Ds voted. The problem is that we need more Rs to vote D in my area or the Ds need to do more to attract people. It's slow, but improving.

@kailagenevieve @hapalochlaena @MariaHill @mentallyalex @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative Also though, there a tendency among Dems to feel discouraged from voting because they don’t get everything they want, while the GOP crow over every minor victory. We need to change that.Of course trolls deliberately feed this, too.

@samhainnight @kailagenevieve @hapalochlaena @MariaHill @mentallyalex @Heimdall @ricardoharvin @TonyStark @daylightatheism @CrazyBusyCreative Half the time, even major victories where we get what we want are met by "But we're all doomed anyway" talk. Some of this is trolls amplifying a sour message, but a lot of it is some being too negative.I know, lame. But those who win elections and find success outside of politics do it typically with the outward presentation of positivity.
