You honkies need to realize high altitude operation is a very diff. thing when you get up there. The air density requires totally, vastly different things than it does down low. Shit like the SR71 is meant for flight up there, and it’s not maneuverable at all. (Granted I’ve not researched this and it’s all off the top of my head from experience over the years and assorted brochure reading, give a lot of slack on numbers and such) When you take a plane up to its service ceiling, it’s a bit like trying to run on black ice. You don’t have the ability to pivot and juke like you would on tarmac. It’s that same sensation when you’re at the absolute limit, ass below the horizon as the plane grunts and pulls at just to maintain a 2 fpm climb. You’re just barely getting the required lift to maintain your altitude, or you’re climbing just enough to outpace your rate of descent. You’re on the edge of a stall, you can feel it, you’re asking for too much from your wings, and the plane wallows like a fat old man after thanksgiving as he waddles to the niggerball couch.

If this gay balloon is REALLY at 60,000 (I’d expect more, with some variation. 60k strikes me as a machine-limited reading more than accurate alt) then it’s right about the advertised (probably fantasy, just like saying a 2005 mustang still has 305 hp after this long) ceiling for most of our planes. And they’re old. And worn out. And not really accustomed to making a 1.5 hour climb to see how high they can get. So, you’re galloping along in an F15 with greatly diminished maneuverability, trying to hit a target that’s going 1/200th of your speed, riding the edge of your performance envelope (bc you’re trying to go as slow as you can while retaining enough lift to stay aloft - oh, and you’re probalby underfueled and underloaded, gotta minimize drag)

Except: The balloon doesn’t have a huge infrared signature. No big ass turbine engine with a 1300º hot section like your usual targetsand its a multi-celled fabric sheatheand it’s going so slow it’s almost standing still (a problem they had in vietnam going against prop fighters w/ jets. you don’t have a lot of wiggle room)So you can try to…..approach from the sunward side and hope that the surface is warm enough for your IR to make it out against the -40º temps and howling winds that surround it (which, BTW, your missile is likely at the very edge of its envelope too, meant to be used in air 3x more dense for its promised performance)

I would be concerned with the dispersion of any laser weapon system. 60,000 feet is a lot of distance for bits of dust and spread to weaken it. I think free space optical systems start maxing out around 1-2 miles (5-10k feet).There was that chemical laser system, the YAL-1, but it was retired/canceled in 2015. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_YAL-1If I were tasked with building a system to destroy this balloon, a ground controlled solid fuel rocket launched from as close to directly below the balloon and explosive-propelled shrapnel to shred the balloon material would be the direction I would go.

@sargoysmuck Satellites are more metal; have more hard, flat surface area to reflect off of; have larger infrared signatures depending on their power source; and they stand out against the blackness of space better than a balloon in the atmoif I had to guess. All these questions are probably a bit like when roasties ask “Instead of shooting the bad guy why not just shoot the gun out of his hand?” Sure, we can, but when you really want to be sure of hitting it, are you certain?
