An open call to any and all #Fediverse white hats, #hackers & network specialists. Please consider thinking about tools to maintain the ability to #SelfHost an instance under #fascism "having robust communication tech strategies that work well with intermittent online periods and things like store and forward, batch updates, sneakernet updates and diverse strategies to keep messages flowing in the face of censorship and active disruption will become critical. Small/portable/low power relay systems will be key. Drive/fly/walk-by wireless msg propagation...Alternative might be if censored at hosting inside one country/jurisdiction is to host in another I guess, then try to get around network or other in-country blocking. Become so distributed that individual blocking becomes harder, a whole warfare skillset rabbithole. We should have some more native tools for defenses ready to go and easy to use/teach." #FOSShttps://bne.social/@geekpete/109797157119899681@benda @geekpete #TheResistanceWillBeFederated

@SrRochardBunson @benda @geekpete Consider the possibilities of ham radio using packet protocols over HF; you aren't going to do a lot of 4k video streaming over a 56kbps connection, but you can do pretty much anything but that.Hams have exclusive access to a class A IP4 network address block specifically for such purposes at 44.0.0.0.I've got my technician's ticket, I'm presently studying for my general exam, and am experimenting and learning the ropes of radio tech from the improvised foxhole crystal set, straight up through multi VFO computer controlled transceiver technologies implemented in SDR hardware. There are of course limitations; these frequencies, while very accessible (they're among the first frequencies to which a new ham has access), are line of sight except under very special conditions. That being said, the technology exists; people who really know how to manipulate it are what are becoming quite scarce. This is a problem that can be rectified.see:https://archive.org/details/dlarc?&sort=-week&page=1

Many thanks to sparseMatrix for this very generous offer. "I just got into a vigorous and refreshing exchange concerning what I will refer to as 'tactical communications readiness'.The concerns were, to be resilient and flexible with respect to internet and voice communications.I brought up ham radio. In the context of that discussion I volunteered to help anyone up their rf electronics game to par for testing for their Ham license.I also tagged the offer as open to anyone within reach of the message, and it occurred to me that I could still do better:So with this message to all, I will broaden the reach of that offer. If you are reading this, and would like to get your amateur radio operator's license, and also would appreciate some amount of guidance and rail greasing, as it were, in this interest - I'm at your service.Ring the bell :)"#amateurradio #hamradio #getlicensed #radiooperator#hackrf #hacktheplanet #electronics #CircuitBendinghttps://ioc.exchange/@sparseMatrix/109801500507818822

@sparseMatrix @benda @geekpete YES!!!! That is what I'm talkin' about! I had an inkling that it was a possibility and part of the reason I became interested in #HAMRadio. It definitely feels like part of the solution. PLEASE keep us updated on your progress! 🙏 Thank you for archive.org link. I've bookmarked in multiple places and will have to go back and explore.https://archive.org/details/dlarc?&sort=-week&page=1Aren't there also shortwave transmitters/repeaters? Could this be an option for transmitting between the wifi/HAM mesh networks? Does this make sense?SW = Intermesh connectivity Wifi/CW = Intramesh network

@SrRochardBunson @benda @geekpete SirRochard there definitely are HF repeaters down there in the short wavelengths, though I'm not certain whether they can be used for data; I know the primary purpose has traditionally been 'voice nets' (think of a long distance radio 'party line').That being said, I think as long as you followed the law and the generally accepted procedures and protocols, and used an otherwise clear frequency, no one would have any complaints, especially if you were deploying your own repeater(s).I'm not certain what you mean by SW and CW in this context but from what I gather reading the rest of your comments I'd say you are definitely on the right track. If you don't have one already, get your ham operator's license at what ever level technical proficiency you can muster, as I say, the entry level technician's class gets immediate access to these frequencies.

@sparseMatrix @benda @geekpete Thanks! I started trying to learn #MorseCode with an app. Is that even required for the entry level technician's class?

@SrRochardBunson @benda @geekpete I gather you are not a Ham! Tsk tsk, you really should address that! :pThe technician's test was profoundly easy. I found that with just a modicum of study I was not just more than competent, but a shoe-in. It was really more about discovering that I already knew a core set of things, and building confidence. The general exam is going to be a bit more challenging ;)My technic was simple: get the practice app for my ipad. The practice app has ALL the questions for each exam, and you practice over all of them - and it can be challenging. But it's free, it has built in lessons, and can explain why you're wrong, should that happen. Then when you take the test, it's usually from the local club guys, and you pay them 15 bucks and they administer the test (they have the materials, and the office supplies, and handle the test result submissions, etc.)1/2

@SrRochardBunson @benda @geekpete Not anymore! but you know what? I'm going to learn it anyway.Either way, it's possible in our time to use the computer to transcode text to CW, and pipe it out the speakers. Which is then piped into the mic on the radio (this is the simplest and oldest way of using your computer with your radio). Similar ops are possible in reverse.

@SrRochardBunson @benda @geekpete The main things you need to know are:- basic electrical safety- basic electrical theory (electrical potential, supply, load, and ground, etc)- an understanding of the relationship between voltage, amperage, and resistance- the bandplan for the technician's class. And you pass, and in a few days you're a Ham. Just like that. Then you can legally build your own stuff and carry the art and science of radio forward. If you want to do this, and need help finding the right practice app, or your local club, or anything I can to help you get your ticket, just ring the bell, man. This goes for anyone within reach of this message.2/2

@sparseMatrix @SrRochardBunson @benda @geekpete a colleague and i were discussing amateur radio and analogized it to the darknet. it's not a lost art/science but with humans plugged into glass all day, it seems it could be.

@SrRochardBunson Admit it, you just want to set up bunch of numbers stations 😜
