@lowqualityfacts The API is a service used by computers to call information from each other without looking at them through the User Interface.Each request has a cost, which is usually tiny, but a big program like Twitter gets billions of API Calls.I have no idea what Twitter is planning to charge, though.

@lowqualityfacts I actually do know what an API is (but don't ask me to explain it, I can't) and when they are too costly, no one uses them.The less APIs get used, the less users will be attracted to Twitter.

@lowqualityfacts "API access" is basically the ability for other websites and programs to talk to Twitter.If they're trying to compete with ActivityPub, they're going in the exact wrong direction. ActivityPub is the free API that powers Mastodon, but it's not limited to Mastodon alone. It a web standard, so any website can talk to any other website.It's stupid to try to charge money for something that everybody else already has elsewhere for free.

But I'd guess it's charging for a personalised layout - wee bit of work for a configuration slavey to set up, continuous revenue w no costs thereafter. Sounds like Musk - tho it wouldn't surprise if, say, he wanted to charge people just for making suggestions!
