Let's talk about the #OpenSource software you've *paid* for. A one time "pay what you want" payment counts (such as for @thunderbird or @elementary). Recurring donations count too, and so do things like buying a "Pro" version. MY ANSWER: Two terrific apps spring to mind which I've continued to use constantly. 1) Standard Notes2) Aptik (#Linux backup software). How about you?

@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary Haven't used those two but I'm always happy to pay for a good product, open source or not. Heck I've even paid a little bit to my nice Fediverse admin. It's nice when you're not the thing being sold 🤷‍♂️

@OtherRetroMatt I'll drink to that! I also donated $8 my instance admin, and I should just keep doing that every month.

@killyourfm @thunderbird @elementary I'm a big fan of one off contributions. I try to donate every month, few quids here or there. So far my favourites are Linux Mint and Fosstodon.

@xpil Your reply made me remember something I'd love to see. Some kind of service that automates FOSS donations for you on a monthly basis. What I mean is that you say "I have $50 to donate this month, show me the projects I can donate to based on the software I use." Soft of like a Patreon, but you rotate the money around to different projects. I'm not articulating this well AT ALL, I apologize...

@killyourfm I think @Liberapay doesn't quite show the projects you know you use, but they do make it easy to donate to projects that let you know you can use Liberapay to support them. I don't think I'd want to "scan my machine" for software to donate to anyway @xpil

@killyourfm @xpil I have an elaborate spreadsheet in Calc where I track projects I want to donate to; their donation options. Then I rank them based on what I use; if they offer one time options and if they offer Stripe as a payment method. Lot of work at first but easy to maintain and add to.

@killyourfm Aseprite is a lovely little pixel art editor. Its open source nature makes it easy to integrate and script into my game’s build tools. I also donate to Gnome, KDE, SDL, and Firefox.

@killyourfmMy last donation went to RClone an amazing tool that speaks a whole bunch of storage protocols (local, SSH, SFTP, Samba, NFS, S3, Backblaze, Onedrive, ...).I mostly use it for testing at work and together with Restic as part of my backup toolchain.I wanted to donate to Restic too, because it's such a great and painless CLI tool and got me into backing up in the first place. Alas, they are not accepting donations right now.

@killyourfm HomeAssistant - I pay for their remote access service as my monthly donation (even though I could set it up myself) as it’s such an integral part of our home and lives. Every socket, light, radiator and more to make our home a more convenient place to live.

@killyourfm during this 2023 I'll support also @pop_os_official. I've been using it for about 2 years in all household computers and I want to give back. I'm on the "install it and forget about it" mindset, and Pop!_OS is perfect for that IMO.

@xemafuentes @pop_os_official I've been this exact same way with Kubuntu for almost 18 months now. Definitely need to donate. It's staggering how many projects I want to contribute to once I sit down and start making that list.
