Very cool how adding an editable text label with the :mastodon: logo gets the biggest centralized code hosting site — an abusive one at that, feeding all your code to train a Microsoft-owned AI — loads of free publicity around here. 🤔Instead, I'm gonna send some love to @Codeberg and @forgejo, since they might actually *implement federation* for code hosting systems. :blobcatthinksmart: As in: joining fedi, instead of just paying lip service like that other code hosting site.#FLOSS #FOSS

In fact you know what? Let's make this thread about cool projects not hosted on Microsoft GitHub.Any self-hostable repo system instance counts (yes, that includes GitLab in my book) counts.Respond with a link to a repo and a paragraph-two of a description of the project, and I will boost it (unless for whatever reason I consider the project meh; it's my thread, sorry :P ).

@rysiek Sealious, our in-house web backend platform. It uses a declarative approach, where you define the shape of the database and accesa policies with simple objects, and it builds a fully-featured REST API and ORM based on that:https://hub.sealcode.org/source/sealious/

@rysiek eh, time for a shameless plugreytan extracts metadata and urls to media on youtube, soundcloud and bandcamp (I'm working on the actual download part currently). it's supposed to be a yt-dlp alternative that can be embedded in weird enviroments more easily (written in rust), though limiting the amount of supported services.https://codeberg.org/transcast/reytan

@rysiek My projects of choice for this are ofc Foundkey and Akkoma. They are respectively a Misskey and Pleroma fork, and thus are both (AP/fedi-compatible) microblogging platforms. Both grew out of the same “bubble” of fedi friends, with each project trying to fix their own set of problems. Foundkey was created to be a more community-managed fork of Misskey, while Akkoma was meant to refocus Pleroma more to user expression, and away from some toxic elements that have started to get associated with Pleroma.

@rysiek ▶️ https://framagit.org/peppercarrotIt's the repo of my FLOSS webcomic Pepper&Carrot with all the translations (63 languages), the fonts, the website, the scripts, scenarios, the wiki, and 89 Members! The largest repo "webcomics" has over 7000 commits and 902 Merge Requests. It's hosted by Framasoft on Framagit: their Gitlab Community Edition instance. We moved (with no regrets) from Github in 2018, when Ms bought it. Next: I study a move to a self-hosted Forgejo (I designed their mascot).

@gothnbass @rysiek does Restagraph handle policy based access control? This is always the biggest diffirentiator for Sealious

One very specific category of projects I will *not* boost is anything positively related to bollockschain, web3, NFTs, and that whole scam-heavy space. If you follow me, you know my stance here. If you don't and want to know what my stance here is, I wrote about it:https://strangematters.coop/web3-vs-fediverse-decentralized-internet/

@rysiek we moved the Fennel programming language off microsoft github to sourcehut in 2020 and have no regrets; it's been much better for us, especially the CIhttps://git.sr.ht/~technomancy/fennelI haven't used github for any new projects since 2015 or so but I had a bunch of things left around on there until last year when I finally moved everything off

@n0toose @rysiek for CI, github doesn't allow you to connect to a failing build over SSH to see why it failed; this is an absolutely critical debugging feature, and I can't understand why anyone would consider a CI system complete without itfor source hosting, I was able to submit a change to sourcehut to add syntax highlighting for Fennel code, and they accepted it with no fusswhen I looked into doing this for github, they refused until we could point to hundreds of Fennel repositories on github, but no one wanted to put their fennel repos on github because the syntax highlighting sucked! really silly policy with obvious chicken/egg problemsthen finally overall, everything on sourcehut loads in a matter of milliseconds; it's ridiculously fast even on very old hardware and makes github feel clunky(bonus reason would be not supporting a company with a track record of terrible ethical decisions, most prominently in copilot and their support of US customs/immigration atrocities)

@n0toose @rysiek I guess for completeness I can mention minor downsides* there's no replacement for GH's wiki; they have a wiki-like feature but it is locked down and won't accept edits from people who aren't on your team (codeberg has this problem too and I don't understand why; have these people never used a wiki before?)* if you have a good email client setup, the patch submission and review flow is much nicer than GH's pull requests, but most people don't have a good email client, so it can be smart to offer a fallback submission method

@technomancy TBH, it is one of the most annoying things in the software we use, indeed. We attempted to solve this multiple times, an upstream PR to Gitea from our side got stalled. At a time, we had a custom patch to enable this feature per project on request, but it was too hard to maintain.Maybe it's time to re-attempt with our new Forgejo fork. Tracked in https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/Community/issues/28 (one of the first issues, obviously)

@rysiek OpenBSD: which had CVSWeb, all the way back in 1995 kicking off the idea of libre/free open source software via a web interface, 13 years before GitHub was even founded.GOT (https://gameoftrees.org/) which is a git compatible ISC licensed alternative from OpenBSD developers! Like OpenBSD's CVSWeb there is gotwebd: https://got.gameoftrees.org/FreeBSD: which has iterated through CVS, SVN, now self hosts git.
