In 451AD, the Hunnic Emperor Attila broke his treaty with Rome. Claiming his right to the Imperial throne, he began scouring Gaul. The Roman general in Gaul, Flavius Aetius, knew Attila personally. He had been raised at the Hunnic court as a diplomatic hostage. Knowing he couldn't defeat Attila alone, Aetius was forced to seek help from an old rival, Theodoric king of the Visigoths. This last alliance between Romans and Visigoths faced Attila's undefeated army at the Battle of Catalaunian Plains. Numbers are unknown but estimates range in the upper tens of thousands for each army. The Huns cavalry advantage allowed them to choose the time and place of the engagement, an open field near sunset. The battle began badly for the allies, for near an hour the Huns rode in circles raining arrows on their shield formations. When they finally charged and engaged, the center of the allied line began to break. Seeing this, King Theodoric personally reinforced the center, narrowly preventing a collapse at the cost of his life. At the moment when all of Attila's forces were committed, Aetius gave the signal and Thorismund, son of Theodoric, led a surprise cavalry charge to the Hun's flank, shattering their army and forever ending Hunnic expansion into Europe. Although Attila escaped, he was found poisoned 2 years later, leading to the dissolution of the Hunnic Empire. Aetius would be assassinated one year after Attila's death. The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains was Rome's final great battle as the Western Empire would ultimately be dissolved only 25 years later.

History does not record the final exchange between Aetius and Theodoric, but I'd like to think it went something like this...

@Fash-E @Eiregoat I'll check it out!So, who was collectivist/communist/fascist in between these groups back then?I have to admit never studying this part of history, but it appears to be quite relevant to our days.

@mukona @Eiregoat The Roman historian Tacitus wrote a book on the ancient Germans were he says a lot of interesting stuff. The Germans were proto-socialist. The tribe chiefs would redistribute land or property if wealth inequality became to severe in order to foster social cohesion. They looked at the Romans civilization as degenerate and feminized. German women were less promiscuous and whores, even hot ones, were shunned. The kinds of rules that are necessary for living together during hard winters.

@Fash-E @mukona @Eiregoat they also drunk alcohol to excess and got into brawls almost every night when not at war (according to Tacitus). Then the following day, severely hungover, they would settle all previous night's disputes in a sort of make shit kangaroo court. It sounds pretty cool tbh. He gives the impression they have two modes: boozing and fighting wars

Also they were extremely wary of empires forming. They banded together when necessary to fight off a larger threat, but if the leader tried to hold onto power after the threat was gone he would be dealt with.Basically how the roman republic worked up until Sulla and the Caesars.

Another important part of feasting and drinking in both germanic and celtic cultures were oaths: When everyone got pissed off their face they'd compete in boasting and swear to take on incredible feats of bravery, especially during a conflict. Then they'd sober up the next day and regret everything but they were still honour bound to bite off the head of that dickhead centurian running the camp across the river.

@Fash-E @mukona @Eiregoat With this in mind, its interesting to note that the word Lord derives from the word for Loaf keeper, and the word Lady derives from the word for Loaf-baker.The Lord was the one who distributed the loaves.
