I mentioned federation feels like the early days again. But that means we have some foresight into how companies will corrupt it.Once it gets popular enough, they'll jump on. But this time they'll suck up any public data and posts for analytics instead of just their own.

Like email, theirs will work with the rest of the fediverse of course. But then introduce features locked into their own products. We'll notice shady things like if you registered with Mastodon with a gmail address, you'll notice email from google suggesting you migrate to google's fediverse, and wonder how they knew.

And there will be scandals like finding out they were selling analytics on open fedi data, or use it for ads, or to influence elections. But eventually it'll be killed, like another Wave, or Orkut, or Plus. While the Fediverse lives on.

@RadicalEdward Selling analytics on openly available data is legal, and expected. If you don't want people to use data... don't give it to them.

@binder @RadicalEdward The question is also: will they respect Mastodon users configuration? There is an option in Mastodon to protect your posts. I have turned it on. I know for a fact that some smaller outfit have, in the past, started scraping data to build social graphs. Including my account. Will Google respect that protection option? Will Facebook respect it? Or will they outsource that dirty job to unethical actors?

@ParadeGrotesque @RadicalEdward If you say, please don't record me, then yell into the street, people are allowed to record you, and they are doing nothing wrong by doing so.People can choose to respect your wishes, but have no obligation to do so.There are only two options1. don't put things out in public2. lobby for legislation to change things.

@binder I am sorry, but:- Option 1 is "shut the f* up, peasant". We all have a right to free speech- Option 2: GDPR is a thing, as is California privacy rulings, etc. It's simple, really: I have a right to speak my mind without my speech and my opinions being captured and analyzed by an algorithm created by a giant corporation for its own profit.Feel free to disagree with me.@RadicalEdward

@ParadeGrotesque @RadicalEdward Sure... but only if you are in one of those places... that being option #2. Even then that doesn't really help. If I'm not in the EU I can ignore the GDPR all I want. It's one of the beauties of the internet... that it is global.

@binder @RadicalEdward GDPR applies to all European citizens and residents, and to all companies who process data of these individuals.Good luck ignoring it.That's the beauty of the Internet: it is global.

@ParadeGrotesque @RadicalEdward Not quite true.GDPR has no jurisdiction outside of the EU. So if you have no pressence in the EU they have no way to apply it.If for example you are in <country> who doesn't care to be nice... you can do whatever you want.
